Fuel Pump

Anyone know where I can get a deal on a fuel pump for a 2001 1500 CARBED model? I doubt anyone has one laying around the garage, but maybe you know somewhere that won't charge $200 for it?

$200 would be a steal compared to the price for a fuel injected model.

The FI ones are 150.00 on eBay and a new one for a carbureted bike is 196.00 on bikebandit.com

Last time I priced one for my 2007, it was ~$400.

Ive seen aftermarket pumps on Ebay for under $50.00, I'm not sure how good they would be.

Bambrat, I have a fuel pump that came off a salvaged bike that I installed once. It didn't work on my bike. Come to find out, my old pump wasn't bad either. It was a wiring problem from the switch. So, I re-installed the old pump and put the replacement on a shelf in the event I needed one later. I was assured that the salvaged one worked but I don't know since I re-installed the old one. Didn't even try the salvaged one. Your welcome to it for $100 plus shipping. Send me a PM if interested.

Bud: What switch are you referring to? Is your 2001 1500 also a carbed model? I was able to find a salvaged fuel pump from a vulcan classic for $55 plus shipping on ebay so I bought it. However, if you can help me with instructions to check the switch wiring, I could do that while I'm waiting for the pump to arrive. Send me a PM or if necessary, I could call you when I get home and can look at my bike. I took a bunch of pics of my bike with the tank off (fuel-pump/filter area).

That may fall under "you get what you pay for".

Bamabrat, yes mine is a 2001 carb'd model. I wish that I could help further but I cannot. I ended up carry mine to a local shop and he repaired it. He stated that it was something to do with a wire running from the ignition switch back into the harness. That's all I know. Electrical problems are not my strong point. Any other mechanical problems I can handle.

Look in the manual to identify the wire that should provide power to the pump. I'm not sure if it comes on with the ignition like a FI one does, but logically it should. I've got the tank off my '99. I can do some testing if you need me to.

According to the manual, yellow is the main power cord and black/yellow is the ground. I hooked mine directly up to the battery and didn't get anything. The pump I ordered online comes in on Friday, and I'll test it the same way before I install it. Last night I hooked the pump up to my multimeter to measure the resistance between the black and yellow wires. According to Haynes, it should be above 20 k ohms. Mine registered 0. Thanks everyone for their help. Maybe the new pump will be the end to it, but I'll keep you updated. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
