Eric Estrada...Who? Me?

In a rush to get out of the door to ride I grabbed my fiance's white half helmet and rode to the parts store to get some odds and ends. On my way back, at a stop light, a guy rolls down his window on his pickup and says, "Hey! Has anyone ever told you you look like Eric Estrada on that bike!?" Sadly, I had to respond, "Yes."
I blame it on the helmet
Oddly enough I didn't know that the bike he rode WAS INDEED a Kawasaki

I tried posting a picture, but it doesn't want to work, so here is the link to it.http://www.flickr.com/photos/4864435...in/photostream

Kawasaki KZ1000 police special I believe, I don't think they ever actually shot anyone for the whole series, it was like watching a soap opera at times, not that I watched that much.

KZ1000P is the model I believe. They manufactured it until 2005 I think. I've owned two bikes related to what the CHP has used...A 1978 KZ1000 and a 2009 R1200RT. Not the P versions, but the same basic bike underneath.

I still want to restore a KZ1000P. They are still around in various conditions. My wife thinks I am crazy. She may be right.

It was the KZ900P ("P" for police special obviously) for the first two series, then they went to the KZ1000P. The 1000 came out in 1978.

The 4 cylinder in lines that Kawasaki came out were the best engines they ever made IMO, bulletproof, I had 3 or 4 KZ650s, then went to the 1000 in 78 when they first made them. Never had a problem with those engines.

That is cool!

Here's a picture of a bike from the show complete with cardboard cutouts of the characters. :-)

Exclamation Mark

I worked at 2 different Kawi dealers from 1976 thru 1982, and worked on many of the police skoots till the city took the maintanence in house.

Those police skoots took alot of abuse and the early versions based on the KZ1000 A/B/C/D engines never lasted many miles, due to the cops keeping the engines running on the side of the road while handing out citations. Those versions would cook all of the engine's internal ruber components, especially the cam chain parts that would literally turn into solid plastic with the roller gears coming apart. Those police skoots were and still are to this day the only engines I have ever seen that turned their valve springs BLUE and PURPLE from the heat!!

In 1981 Kawi came out with the "J" model engine which had a much better cam chain system and solved the cam chain related repairs.

We had fun on our test rides!! Tho I never turned the siren or the lights on someone while test riding a cop bike, EVERYONE always pulled out of my way to make room for me!!

And this is why I like motorcycle forums. We always get so much information Thanks, Ray! Loving the grips BTW
I'm still having occassional backfire, but nowhere as bad as before Marble-ing (I have to make sure I spell that correctly or else I'll never hear the end of it from some jokers here) the bike.
