J&M CB Install Problems

Last week my Kawi dealer installed a J&MCB-2003 on my 2010 Nomad. Here is a synopsis of the problem:

> When we tried to connect the antenna cable to the unit it would only hand thread two or three turns, the only way to get it seated was to use wrenches on the connection.
> When it was only connected to a couple of turns the CB didn't work but the iPod was great; no engine noise.
> I hear the engine noise and it increases with the revs.
> The iPod works fine - except the engine noise drowns it out.
> If I say something (not while touching anything on the CB) I get feedback in my ear phones.
> The CB doesn't send or recieve; of course I upped the squelch and tried all channels, even on the highway with lots of truckers.

Can anyone offer any suggestions I am seeing the dealer later today to try and troubleshoot the problem. He is very experienceed, Kawi only dealer and has installed many Voyager CB's with no problems.

Thanks,

Bogie

I installed the same CB on my wife's 900 and had some of the same problems. Same exact issue with the antenna connection. Had to use 2 sets of pliers. Seems like they'd figure that one out. I was able to partially correct the feedback issue. Initially, I had the CB connected to an auxiliary fuse panel that I previously installed and the feedback was insane. I disconnected it from there and tried direct to battery, and auxiliary connectors. Seems like I got the least amount of feedback on the aux connectors. She said she still hears some noise, but it's tolerable. I talked to some of my friends who are HAM operators, and they said the noise filter that comes with the unit is probably a cheap one and needs to be replaced with a higher quality. Haven't gotten around to that yet. I don't know what to tell you on the send/receive. Hers does that fine.

Engine noise is almost always related to signal wires/cables, ie antenna cable, too close to power wires and cables.
Since the ipod doesn't need an antenna to work, it should sound great without the antenna cable tightened. Complete the connection, though and voila, engine noise. Try having them reroute the antenna cable and your headset cable as far away from power cable as possible. The other solution is to try shielding those using metal tape.

Feedback is normally related to a mic being to close to its output source (speaker/headset) or sensitivity on mic is too high or volume on speaker/headset is too high.

Hope this helps.

Why not call J&M? They have one of the best customer service, IMHO.

Good luck with J&M customer service. Called them about my wife's CB, and once I told them I hooked it up per their directions, they didn't have any idea what to tell me. But then again, maybe I got the new guy.

antenna should be grounded to the frame. Not sure why the conections are so hard to thread unless thay are cross threaded.
