Motorcyclist critical after collision with semi

by Derek Quizon - Aug. 28, 2010 03:28 PM
The Arizona Republic

A collision between a semitruck and a motorcycle early Saturday has left the rider in critical condition.

The accident occurred on the 1700 block of Northwest Grand Avenue, when the driver of the semitruck clipped one of three motorcyclists riding near the truck.

Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Martos said the accident was initially ruled a hit-and-run because the driver left the scene. But about half an hour after police came to investigate, the driver of the truck called in, saying he had not realized he had been in an accident.

The driver said he suspected he may have clipped one of the riders but initially wrote it off, Martos said. But he still the feeling he may have hit someone nagged at him until he pulled into a nearby parking lot.

When he noticed oil on the wheels and scuff marks on the tires, he called the police.

Police are not planning to pursue a criminal investigation into the accident.

At least he did call in. I know it is tough driving 18 wheelers as I did it myself for a while. I know miles equal money but these guys need to slow down some and pay more attention.

My thoughts are with the rider. Semi's and bikes just don't mix well. I stay as far away as possible from them after one pulled out to pass a group of us on bikes, side swiped a car and sent the car across the median and into lanes of on coming traffic.
All this happened right beside me.

Not is right, scared the h*ll out of Me. We were on a trip, so after parking the bikes that night at the hotel, I had more than my usual share of beer.
