Dan has a cop story you won't believe

How ironic, or appropriate, that this would happen to me of all people on the board huh?

Here's the deal, my brother-in-law was shot and killed by the cops yesterday. ??? ??? ??? ???

He was separated recently from my sister (nothing like me, a top notch, beautiful, intelligent, businesswoman). He hasn't been taking the pending divorce (her choice, not his) very well, and she got a restraining order against him. He keeps violating it and being an ass.

Yesterday he called the cops and told them he was suicidal and the cops tracked him down using cell phone tower triangulation and an airplane. He hit a police vehicle with his truck when they showed up, went on a short chase (very rural secluded area) then got out and pointed a gun at them. That resulted in two deputies both shooting him up pretty good.

He was an asshole who needed shot in that situation. And it's too bad for the cops and their families. You have to be a psychopath to not have emotional ramifications for taking a life, even if it is in self-defense. So he was an asshole to do that to them.

He was also an asshole to put his kids in the position of having all their school mates see this on the news (his name will come out today). He could have gone in a way that wasn't as damaging to his kids, though it would still be harmful.

I saw the story in this link yesterday, but didn't know it was him. I didn't know I'd ever be the "next of kin" that a name on a news story wasn't being released for.

Weird huh? Dan and cops.

Wow, you don't seem too heartbroken over this, so I'll express my sympathy to your sister and her family for having to be put through this unfortunate situation.

I saw that story in one of the SLC papers but obviously couldn't have made the connection.

Yes, sympathies to my sister and her kids.

Of course it effects me somewhat, but I'm not too put out by it other than how it effects her and her kids.

Unfortunately, I'm the one who introduced them. My family hasn't let me forget over the years that she was all but engaged to a great guy (we all still know him, and he was truly a great guy and still is) and I introduce her to a guy I worked with just to come play volleyball with us. Little did I know they would go out and eventually get married.

I tried to stop her from marrying him (just by letting her know what he's really like- we were carpenters together), which then put me on the outs with them. Trying to stop a marriage, that does in fact happen, isn't good for the relationship going forward :(

She's spent 20 years married to a real asshole, and I was so glad that she was finally divorcing him. The whole family was glad. I was worried though that he would kill her. He was unstable, either the life of the party at gatherings, or a wet blanket asshole. She got a protective order against him, and a concealed carry permit. But I was still worried that he'd kill her, and he continually violated the protective order. Kind of an, "If I can't have her, nobody can type".

So I'm glad that he's gone, and she won't get killed by him. I just wish he would have taken too many pills, and fall asleep, and have it end up being a dirt nap. Then his kids could get in denial and think that he "accidentally" took too many, or whatever.

Getting himself all over the news, and having their friends and classmates all know that, "there goes the girl who's dad got in a shootout with the police" was such a jerk thing to do to his kids (high school age). High school social life is hard enough without your dad on the news.

He burned enough bridges with his family that my sister, who was finally escaping him, now has to do the funeral for a guy she wanted nothing more to do with.

Ya, no sympathy for me, but plenty for her and her kids.

Your sister sounds like mine. Tough, bright, successful. I think she will pull through this allright and she will bring the kids throug with her.

Suicide by cop. A cowards way out!
People like your brother in law aren't thinking about anybody but them selves. Their mind is so clouded they can only see things as they affect them, not others.
Your sister and her children have my sincerest sympathy. I hope they can move on with their lives and realize none of this was their fault.

Dan has a cop story you won't believe

Last week, we had 3 separate incidents here in the valley where some suicidal person climbed out on a freeway overpass and threatened to jump. Of course, the cops shutdown the freeway for hours trying to talk them down.

I'm not going to win any popularity contests for this, but my feelings are they should have one attempt to talk them down in a reasonable amount of time. If unsuccessful, they bring in a sharpshooter and "resolve" the situation and get traffic moving again. If people knew that doing stuff like this wouldn't result in a bunch of attention, they'd figure out another way to deal with their issues.

There was an incident a few weeks ago in San Diego where they shut down a busy freeway and people were stuck in place for 8 hours until the situation was resolved.

I am very very sorry for your neice and/or nephew(s). They are the ones that will suffer the most because he was such a self-centered coward. Next sorry for your sister, not so much for her loss which seems minimal at this point, but for all the work she is going to be putting in over the coming years with her children.

Scott,... I agree with you to some degree. It's not right, or fair to inconvenience others while they try to grab the attention for a "few hours". Your thoughts to "resolve the situation" are possibly a natural knee jerk response. I've had similar thoughts on how to handle people such as those you speak of. But when I stop and think about it, these kind of people will always find a way to grab the spotlight for their own cause. Such as you just saw/heard above in the orig. post. But I feel your "pain" when it comes to their attitude and self righteousness. It pisses me off too.

I'm not sure if I detect any guilt - but if you even have a trace of any that you were the one that introduced them, get rid of it. Life cannot be lived watching a rear view mirror.

Support your nieces and nephews. If he was a jerk for that long, there's already some damage.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Dan, I'm truly sorry that this sort of thing had to happen to your sister and her kids. Suicide is always a very selfish "solution" to ones problems. Suicide by Cop is the most heinous and cowardly method of all. However, I'm glad that he didn't kill your sister and/or the kids as happens too many times in situations similar to this.

My prayers go out to all those left behind.
