Windshield vs. Fairing

I see many of the members with fairings on their bikes, I'm just wondering why so many do? This is my first bike with a windshield this big and it blocks out the wind to the point where it almost feels like I'm not even on a bike, I'm not complaining, its great but I'm wondering why a fairing. Doesn't the fairing kind of close you in? Does it obstruct your vision at all? I'm 6'1 so that's not an issue. I know it does looks nice on the bike. Any other issues that you might have noticed, as opposed to just the clear shield? Kinda looking for Pro's but really Con's

Joe
two biggest reasons (IMHO) are the fairings allow a bunch of electronics (stereo&speakers, power outlets, tachs and other gauges) and the fairing provides coverage for the hands and arms. Some might argue that they are also a little more steamlined but they add 10-15 lbs over a shield so that kind of balances out. (again IMHO)

Windshield vs. Fairing

I chose to add mine because I liked the look and wanted to add a radio. It is easy enough to take on and off, and I sometimes go bacj to the windshield and even ride with neither one. That said it offers perhaps a little more wind protection, but mostly is just the "look" I was after.

I like the looks. You can pickup shields to fit in it for cheap, to go really low for looks, or really high for protection. Stereo and speakers if you like music, and any other electronics. I also ride year round, so hand protection is very nice. They finally came out with the Vaquero this year, but they should have had two versions of the Nomad since intro, a shield version and a batwing version.

I like it because to me it looks better visually, but thats a personal taste thing. It allows me to have a radio that looks built in, not an afterthought, I can have gauges, and a little more wind protection. I just like the full dresser look overall.

Well I have to agree ....it was the looks for me too but it also stopped the wind buffering I was getting from the windshield! If I had the buffering all the time I really would have gotten another bike!............................................. ....Love the Fairing! Hard lowers on the way ,,,wooo hooo

I like the way a fairing looks on a touring bike, and the accessories you can install in one. I like listening to music and got sick of messing with ear buds. Plus, the bike handles better with a fairing instead of a big slab of vertical plexiglass.

The only thing better is a full fairing like the Goldwing has. Now those really cut the wind and rain. Plus it allows, like they have said, a place for stereo and speakers, gauges and other goodies. Most even have extra storage.

I put on a Memphis shades fairing because I like the look of a fairing and wanted more hand and arm protection .Less wind buffeting.Since the memphis shades has no inner part , I don't think there was any weight difference over the big windshield I took off.

What companies make the batwings? There must be numerous brands out there. Is there one that is more common or popular with the Nomad crowd?
What kind of price are we looking at?

Reckless has the best price and good quality you can catch one on ebay for 250 bid 1 time at that price and if you don't get it wait on the next one shipping is 50 and then you have it painted and put your radio in and there you have your fairing.
