Hey Doc; DVM question

Doc, Were you a large animal vet ( horse-cow) or a small animal vet (dog-cat)?
Reason I ask is we have two Boxers. So many people see them when we walk them and say they would love one. We tell them over & over to speak to a vet and ask them to recomend a breed for them. We walk them 2 miles a day and after a long day at work, it isn't always easy. They ARE a handful.
Do you agree that too many people get animals that are not matched to the humans lifestyle?

Hey Doc; DVM question

I am no doc but I truly believe that a ton of people never think it through. We adopted a two year old chocolate lab 2 years ago. He weighed 120 pounds. The people never had time for him and over fed him. We have him down to 83 pounds and walk every day rain or shine. It is not uncommon to walk five miles. He will play catch until I collapse and still be ready for a walk. A lot of folks who get an active dog would be better off with a goldfish. Just like a child, dogs are not a novelty but a commitment.

Hey Doc; DVM question

I've got a Border Collie....absolutely the smartest dog I have ever owned including several setters that were excellent bird dogs. But this dog has to have attention paid to it and has to be able to get out and run everyday. Some folks buy them to be inside dogs.....mine does well inside when its gets below freezing and behaves as trained, but you gotta let her out to play every couple hrs if its light out or she will go stir crazy. So I agree, you gotta treat them right and take into consideration the breed.

I thought I was out of the dog business until 2 years ago when my son comes to me and says "Dad, a boy needs a dog!" .......... man, do those kids know how to get you or what ??
