Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

Well, I changed the front final drive oil seal today and I can say I am relieved it is over and done with. It was very easy to do and took only about 2 hours start to finish. The main seal looked good and the oil was clean with no metal in it so I limited the service to inspecting everything, and replacing the front seal. I was going to take pictures but with 100 degree heat index, I wanted to get it over with. Lets hope this solves the oil dripping out of the front of the drive shaft. We shall see.

Start with the easy. If it works, good deal. If not, then I buy the tools needed and go a little deeper. Here is to crossed fingers.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

30 mile test ride with Isaiah and Kim on her bike went fine. No oil so far. Fingers still crossed. Oh what a night for a ride. For those of you who have never been to Bricktown in OKC, it is awesome. Put away your Misconceptions about Oklahoma, tornadoes, cows, little house on the prairie (I know, it was done in Kansas or something). Oklahoma city has taken a giant leap forward. If you get a chance and are traveling through our great state, make it a point to check out Bricktown. Do it on a Friday or Saturday night for an even better experience. Walk the canal, take in a movie at Cine' Capri, Go bowling at the Red Pin. There is a lot of fun going on down there. It is my new old favorite city stop.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

As long as you installed the new seal in the same position as the old one youll probably be ok.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

I just do what ever seal and O rings are there in an area, to reduce any come backs. So I wouldn't do every single seal on the gear unit if it were just the pinion seal, but unless I could satisfy no O rings were also leaking i would like also do them too.

SO far I have never done any, but expect to be soon on PatrickM's bike..

If anyone can confirm the O rings are not usually a cause, maybe just the seal will happen.

What I don't understand is if the seal leaked and oil is everywhere, how can one tell a O ring isn't also another cause in the shaft housing? I don't think any one can tell.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

Well, it is not leaking now, and I really didn't have much of a choice as I don't have either tool to replace the o-ring. If it leaks in the future, then I guess I will be finding me the right tools. Until then, I am going to ride.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

I never had to replace the O rings either, just the oil seal as they appeared ok. I did use a bit of pipe dope on the threads though, just to be sure it would seal.

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

I am not familar and guess i might hjust have what ever tooling does it and all of it on hand anyway, unless it is a special tool, which I kinda doubt.

But I know what it is like to not have every tool, and try to figure ways to get there with out one here and there..

You can let us all know... just by making a report every so often

As for me so far all I do is change the oil and other things when the books says..

Add stuff when I can , but don't have leakings..

Did a rear tire and the swing arm, when the tire was dead..... Did the ft tire and forks when the ft tire was dead..

Will drop that tire when I get a new fender, because a jeep killed the fender dead, ...

No leaks not once in 14,500 miles so far.

My day is just coming.. Sooner or later it will leak. The bad one with be engine oil and coolant.

I just might own the bike that long too...

Final Drive Oil Seal *UPDATE*

I think my imput seal is the culprit too. The damn thing weeps oil out of the drive shaft tube. I keep checking the level in the diff and it never seems to be low - I will change out the seal this Winter when I repair the damage from Sturgis. Do you still have the replacement seal size? -- X -- X-- mm
