HD front wheel

For those that mounted a larger front wheel and had to shim or modify the calipers how is that done ? Could someone explain it to me? looking at mounting a 18 inch front wheel on my 2010 nomad. I know that the rotors are 300mm however I have heard that the calipers had to be shimmed ??

Picture or PM would be appreciated

Tkx

You don't need to shim the calipers. You actually have to remove .125 from each of the fork legs where the calipers bolt up because the width from rotor to rotor is wider than the Kawi wheel. Then since the HD bearings are at different depths (left/right), you need to have different spacers made. This is how you do a 05-08 1600. Not sure if the measurements would be the same for a 1700.

Ok Dave that makes more sense...if per say the 1600 and 1700 are the same how will I determine ... if I file where they mount enough....I'm guessin when you can slide them on easily on the rotor itself ?

wheel spacers I know the left and right are different ,,, is there a way to determine the width of them to keep the keep wheel centered ?

Keep the file in your toolbox. You need to have them machined perfectly flat and to precise depths. I'm pretty sure I've seen where someone here mounted a 1700 wheel on their 1600. In that case the dimensions for the spacers would be the same.

I have a 1700 wheel on my 1600, and it was a direct swap using my 1600 rotors and spacers. All the 1600 & 1700 parts (bearings & seals, center spacer, both outside spacers) are even the same part numbers from Kawasaki. So I would say that doing this to a 1700 would be exactly like you would do to a 1600.

Very interesting. If you can install a 1700 wheel on a 1600 with no mods then a 2010 and up 18" HD Street Glide/Road glide wheel should pop right on a 1700 with a few minor mods. All you should have to do is remove 1/8th inch from each fork caliper mount and cut the left spacer to 1.205 and the right to 1.295 inches.

Heres the original thread on this mod.

BTW...are you aware there is a 19" wheel on the 2015 HD SG's and RG's? I'm already shopping for one but the prices are a little steep right now.

Bill I sent you PM. Question bout a wheel I found.

Thanks

Edit;
After some research I think I have it figured out. Everything should work ABS bearing or Non ABS as I will have to make spacers anyways. Rotors seem to be 11.5" = 292.1mm That still may work with the OEM cap. I think???

What is the Rotor dia. on the HD 18" wheels?

I just was looking at a picture of the new Vulcan S bike, and relaized that it has an 18" front wheel. Could this fit our 1700 bikes?

Bill, I just sold a 99 Nomad and bought a 2012 Vaquero. I have been looking at 21" wheels but have considered the 19" 2015 HD wheels you mentioned. I may have a line on one cheap and have wondered the best way to make it fit. Wouldn't it be easier/better to mill the wheels were the rotors bolt? Haven't really got all the specs yet, spacers bearings, etc. Did some basic measuring today and noticed the rotor problem right off.

I really can't offer any advice on a Vaquaro wheel mod as I don't have any experience with it. All I can say is if the Vaquero has a 25mm front axle and uses 300mm brake rotors it should be possible.
