AZ Bike week is this week. It is always marred by tragedy. The woman killed in this crash was the publisher of the AZ Motorcycle Guide, a local monthly magazine for bikers. She was well known throughout the AZ motorcycle community. I just heard on the new that the driver of the Nissan will face no criminal charges.

-------------------------

The woman killed Saturday afternoon in a collision between a motorcycle and a Nissan Rogue at 43rd Avenue and Bell Road has been identified as Kimberly Chapman, 55.

She and an unidentified man of about 60 were on a 1995 Harley-Davidson headed east on Bell just before 5 p.m. At the intersection, a westbound 2011 Nissan Rogue driven by an unidentified 22-year-old man turned left in front of the motorcycle.

The older man was hospitalized in serious condition. The cyclists were not wearing helmets. Police said the driven of the Nissan was not impaired.

And another Bike Week fatality...

A Scottsdale man was killed in a motorcycle accident on Scottsdale Road at Grayhawk Drive about 4:25 p.m. Monday, police said Tuesday.

Allan Wynn, 64, was heading north on Scottsdale Road on his 2007 Honda Goldwing motorcycle when it collided with an SUV driven by a 71-year-old Scottsdale woman, police said. The driver of the SUV was turning left onto Grayhawk and apparently failed to yield, police said.

Wynn was thrown off the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries, police said.

No citations yet have been issued, police said.

In my opinion, failure to yield resulting in death should be negligent manslaughter. In the first story, the driver said he didn't see the bike. How is that not negligent? I just don't get it.

Unless the biker is Hauling A$$ and exceeding the speed then the one turning in front ought to be charged bet he would not turn in front of a semi. Second thought I had a kid turn in front of me in a jeep that the hood was 4 foot tall(mudder) but I missed him and read him is rights after I changed underwear.

My sig-pics show an accident clock. It indicates the direction from which most motorcycle accidents occur. It plainly shows that a majority of accidents occur when a cage is turning left in front of a motorcycle.

I obviously don't know the circumstances to these accidents; but I have often seen riders "blowing-down" streets without consideration of any cages along the route that might turn in front of them. I figure each one of those riders are merely waiting their turn to be a statistic.

Sorry to hear about the two deaths though. That is never news one wants to hear.

Our passion can be a dangerous one, and I assume we all are aware of that fact. I have told my family if something were to happen to me when riding, they should know I am quite aware of the risks involved; but however I choose to ride anyway.

Another one today. Rider was apparently at fault this time.

A motorcyclist is in critical condition after colliding with a pickup truck in north Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the motorcycle rider was apparently heading west on Deer Valley Road when he ran a red light at 23rd Avenue and collided with the pickup, which was making a left onto Deer Valley. The rider was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department.

I have never attended a large gathering of bikes. I was to attend rolling thunder last year but my buddy's bike broke down on the ride to D.C. I will still like to attend an event with a lot of bikers but I am not so sure anymore. I understand and accept the risks associated with riding in general but why increase that risk?

Your not increasing the risk.
You just hear about it in the news more if it happens at a large gathering.
The more bikes the better chance of one of those bikes crashing.
The risk to you is the same as ever.
Besides, it is a freekin' riot to get together with with old friends and making new ones.

If you don't like the way someone is riding, drop back a couple places. And keep an eye on everything. You will be fine. ;)

That's 4 since Saturday. Usually we average one per day during bike week. Just the ones serious enough to make the news.
