HAM Radio
Just wondering if there are any other KawaNOW members that are HAM Radio operators, other than myself. And of so what, or if you have a radio mounted on your Nomad.
I've given it some consideration, particularly for longer trips, just haven't spent much time looking into what might or might not work. KF7ACL Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Im not into radios myself, but my supervisor is big into ham radio as well as some others. His hobby is stormchasing and his van is outfitted like military vehicle with all sorts of electronics.

HAM Radio
KB0** here.
Never tried mounting HAM radios on my bike but I have a nice HF setup in my Jeep (IC-7000 with Tarheel multi-band antenna). I do a lot of HF DX work from home but never got interested in 2 meter handhelds and such. What kind of rig do you run at home?

HAM Radio
Carried a portable on the last two trips. Never thought to use it on either one. Forgot I even had it along on the South Dakota run until I got home and unpacked the bags. Guess I will leave it home the next time. I've been a Ham since '68.

Ivan,
I'm fairly new to HAM and have not set up a "proper" station. I use a mobil Y-7800 and a home-built J-pole, usually operating in the 2 meter band. I'm still pretty much a listener altough I've gotten a bit more active in the local ARC (Maple Valley ARC - KE7KEY). Login or Register to Remove Ads |

Hey Duke
I have had a ham license since about 1989 and have never done a thing with it.

HAM Radio
Hi Duke,
I too am a licensed HAM radio operator but currently am not active. I have been licensed since about 1970. My original call sign was WA7PBE. I had my call sign changed approximately 7 years ago to W7KXW in honor of a personal friend who taught me radio at a young age. He too was into amatuer radio and his call was K7KXW. I have two 2m rigs at this time. One in the truck which is a ICOM IC-8000 and the other is a ICOM hand held. 73's Doug S. (aka DMspike) W7KXW |

HAM Radio
Breaker, breaker 19...
Oh... I guess HAM radio doesn't do it that way. Seriously... I look out my window each day at an antenna arrangement of my nearest neighbor that looks like this guy can talk to the moon if he wants to. He claims he can talk to people on the other side of the earth. I don't personally know if that is possible with the curve of the earth... or if there is some way other HAM operators relay the signal. Either way... he is a "nut" for this stuff! I mean really... can you imagine spending a lot of time huddled over some sort of electronic unit to communicate with other people in other parts of the globe? God forbid they have any common interests! I just don't see where people can get addicted to that sort of thing!! (Think about it and maybe you'll see my humor. There is no offense intended with my post. Hey! I love communicating with people from all around the world -- otherwise I wouldn't be on this site.)

I'm still looking for an inexpensive HT (do they exist) to use during those functions that where we assist the community; parades, runs, etc. Do you use your HT on the bike? |

Duke,
I have a dozen of different HTs. Yaesu VX-170 is the best choise for a 2 Meter HT. I think they sell them new for around $115 and offer the best sound/reception quality, great battery life and they are water submersible too.
