Update! Clock and odometer resetting

Curious if anyone else has this happening. On random occasions after starting the bike I will see that the clock and odometer have reset. Happened twice one day this past week after not doing it for a few days.

Happens ONLY after starting. Pulled speedometer from tank, pulled the seat and into the headlight bucket checking wiring, no loose connections I can find and nothing I can do to make it happen.

On a ride yesterday, before starting the bike I turned off the light bar thinking it was pulling the battery real low with the lights and starter and it didn't reset once. It is random enough that one ride doesn't convince me it is the problem but wondering if someone has seen this before!

K2 is getting a little snippity :( :(

Thanks!!!

Mine has done the same thing only when I disconnect the battery ground cable to add an accessory. Sounds like a loose connection somewhere.

Mine does it too once in a while, Im suspecting the battery may be getting weak and need replacing. It seems to do it more often during the cold weather on my bike..

Update! Clock and odometer resetting

Noticed the same symptoms a month or so before my battery died. Bike was only about a year old when that occurred, Hasn't happened since the new battery.

A year old? What battery did they put in it?

I have a feeling that some dealers cycle their old batteries through new bikes and put the battery that came with the bike on the shelf. New bike does not mean new battery.

A dealer pulling stunts like this would need to be shut down, prosecuted, and sent to the tank for a while IMO.

Update! Clock and odometer resetting

I had a similar problem with my bike shortly after purchase I would find after starting it the trip meter reset and the time screwed up. I think it was just battery as the weather warmed up and the ride length and frequency increased the problem went away. Hopefully my dealer is not a stealer

Jack: my '05 has reset twice. I went out to start it and the battery seemed weak(slow turn over but started) and then you notice the odo. I started using a battery tender from wally world($20) and it hasn't happened since. Im voting weak battery. :-)

Update! Clock and odometer resetting

Thanks all for confirming my suspicions. Just strange for a new bike except to think back a while:

Probably sat on the dealers floor for at least six months before putting a battery tender on it late December when i bought it..

It reset twice in one day before I posted this and probably a dozen times since I've had it, now not once in two long days of riding yesterday and today. More an annoyance than anything but will be keeping an eye on it, and will let the dealer know of it to expect it in if it keeps up.

Thanks all!!!

Jack do a load test.. Set up a volt meter off the battery direct. Pull all the plug wires so the engine can't start.

Take a reading with everything off, then flip the key on and see if just that begins to drop the readings fast..

If not too bad, then crank the engine a full measured 10 seconds.

If the battery reads less than 10.5 volts at the end of 10 seconds, think about a new battery.

While yer there you may as well hook up a charger not rated over 1.75 amps, and give it a moment.

Install the plug wires again, and then start the engine with the charger disconnected of course. Take readings of charging, and don't be too surprised if you see something like 15.2 volts...

Update! Clock and odometer resetting

When I first turn on the ignition switch, the speedometer needle cycles all the way to the right and then returns to zero. If I hit the starter button before this cycle is complete, my clock and my trip odometer will reset to zero. I have observed this on more than one occasion but haven't found out yet why this happens.

I am not sure, but you just might want to wait a instant longer.

While the speedo is doing that the ECU is self testing.

I do not know if you can harm the ECU this way, probably not, but I might be wrong....
