My Best MPG...So Far
Well...I've had my Nomad for about a month now. Have been riding it back and forth to work almost everyday. It's about 120 miles round trip. In the mornings it's usually pretty calm..but in the evening on the way home it's usually either a strong headwind or a side wind. I work in Corpus Christi. I usually run around 80-85 mph as indicated on the speedo. And usually don't hesitate to twist the throttle extra hard once in a while.
Anyway...I check mileage on every tank..I usually just fill it up everyday when I get back to my home town at the same station. I fill it up all the way into the neck to about an inch or so from the very top. I fill it this full because it's still 8 miles to my house out in the country...and I know the level will come down a little by the time I get home. I usually average around 32-33mpg. Well today...Tried an experiment to see if I could stretch the fuel mileage a little more. I took it easy the whole day. To and from work...Easy,gradual accelerations. No winding up too much...Smooth Shifts.. You know...Gentle on her for a change. Kept my top speed at no more than 75mph....but ran between 70-75mph almost the whole time. By the way...my entire ride to work is all on the highway. I could tell already before filling up at my usual fuel stop that I was doing better by the way the fuel gauge bars would disappear in relation with the odometer. Anyway..I got 37.1 MPG....Much Better I do not think I can ride like this everyday...It's too slow for all the other traffic I encounter. I just thought I would share my findings on my Nomad. This thread should not start any uproars as my other threads did. PS....I very happy with this bike...The ONLY this I miss about my former Vulcan 900 Classic LT.....is the excellent fuel mileage. DOUG.

My Best MPG...So Far
Well, when we move up from 800 and 900cc bikes to a double-the-size, mildly tuned, much heavier motorcycle, something will have to give. Before I had to stop riding for a while to recover from my accident, I was averaging between 34 and 40, depending on how I was riding. I'm not too disappointed with high 30's, considering what we have in this bike.

I did over 300 miles on Sunday, lots of hills from 1100' to nearly 7000' and back down again (3 times), I filled up 3 times and averaged just under 41MPG. The best I've ever done was 50.72mpg, but that was from Camp Verde to Phoenix, about 120 miles and a lot of hills at a leisurely pace.

The best I have done is around 46 mpg. Most of the time I run around 40 to 42 mpg. The worst was 33 mpg. This was doing 85 to 90 indicated on the interstate.

My Best MPG...So Far
Saturday I rolled up 229 miles 2 up. The first half was on twisty 2 lane roads with some of the curves having 20 mph posted speed limits. I got 42.2 mpg on that tank. On the way home I rode I-55 South averaging 85 mph indicated and got 36 mpg. I was very proud of the 42.2 mpg. It was the best she's done in her 2,300 miles. Also, the first tank was 90 octane and the second was 93. Go figure...

My Best MPG...So Far
This past weekend;
1-up, range of speeds (mostly fast) by myself, windy all directions (Nomad didn't care). Fuel light came on @ 173 mi- filled up 178.6 mi with 4.59 gal = 38.9 mpg 1-up, range of speeds a little slower with group on way back, windy. no light filled at 172 mi with 3.922 gal - 43.855 mpg Sunday, 2 up,windy, mostly slow riding with some harley guys out for a leisure cruise in the heat. Their putter range and mine differ. I shifted quite a bit from 5th to 4th. 60 to 65 mph cruise. light on at 173 mi, on E way before, filled at approx 179 ( didn't really look buit know where I was and was happy to have fuel) with 4.497 gal = 39.8 mpg Had switched to mid grade this tank. Too much ping, less power. Switched back to premium @ premium price. '07 1yr old (June 2) 10k mi no mods intake or exhaust, just switched to Amsoil, E3 radial back, stock stone front Normal run around town and short runs - avg 38 mpg

I can usually get over 180 miles to the tank, my best has been 202. My worst was 135, after I cleaned the throttle body it went back up to 180+

I get about 32 - 34 mpg avg. Mixed stop and go with rural cruising. Beats the 21 mpg I get from the car. Like Doug, low mileage probably do to my right wrist more than the bike.
BTW, I tried an experiment last week. Wated to see how far I could go when the yellow (low fuel) light came on. I squeezed out 27 miles. It stalled 3 times on the way to the gas station. To close for comfort. I'll stick with 20 miles past the yellow light. |

I wonder why they vary so much? I typically get 41-42 mpg. Most on a tank was 212 miles and the yellow light had been on for 3 miles. (tailwind) I usually refill between 170 and 180, before the yellow comes on. If I go 75 or faster for the tank it drops to 37-38 mpg. Only time I've been down to the low 30's was going 75 with a really strong head wind.
I'm fairly easy on the throttle most of the time, but I still can't see how we are getting 12-15 mpg differences. My bike is stock. Have some of you who are reporting mid-low 30's modified your bikes? I'd sell mine and change bikes if it were getting 32. That just isn't enough range on a tank. I think 170 miles is OK but marginal. I hate it when I have to stop for gas rather than because I am ready for a stretch. Any thoughts on why such a wide range of mpg values?
