Another Nomad in Germany?

Might be a new Nomad in Germany within a couple months' time.

I was just offered a job in Schweinfurt, Germany. I hae been looking to teach overseas for a couple years and just got offered a job teaching for the Dept. of Defense Dependant Schools.

Nothing is totally in concrete yet. They have mailed me the official offer package and I have an A$$ load of paper work and hoops to jump through, but unless something goes wrong, I'm in. School starts over there in only 10 days. I will obviously be missing the first few days. These next few days for me will be a whirlwind of activity. Hopefully I will get my official orders by Wednesday and get things rolling.

I always liked the BMW K1200LT but shyed away from it since there was a lack of dealerships and services available to them in my area. Who knows how long I will be able to hold out on one once I get over there. Nomads are pretty rare in my part of VA anyway. I can't begin to wonder how many questions I will get about it in Germany. It will take abot 6-8 weeks before I actually get it once it is shipped over. By that time it will be starting to get cold and I do not carry a strong fondness for cold weather riding ( read: Sissy) Hpefully I will be able to enjoy it bofre winter hits.

The plan is to ship your USA made for bike to Germany? Will that fly? Euro bikes have another set of regs.. are wired another way and have different lighting.. and stuff...

Congratulations. I certainly hope everything works out good for you. I retired from the Army but never got the opportunity to go to Germany. I did manage to get three one year tours of Korea. Yea.

It hadn't started to shake yet. I was just approaching the tach's redline and, well, having the wife and daughters in the car is a bit of an inhibitor on the testosterone-injectors.

On my next-to-last day, I was driving north from the Alps toward Frankfurt. For over an hour, not one (that's ZERO!, dammit) German passed me.

Gotta love that Autobahn.

What? Oh, excuse me. Hey, good luck on the teaching job.

As far as what macmac said--You'll get a USA tag. You have to meet DoD safety inspection requirements. If your bike was good here, it'll be good there.

Sounds like a great opportunity---how did you find the job? How many hoops did you have to jump through. I've been teaching a long time and will qualify for retirement in April and really love Europe. It would be nice to go over and teach 5 years or so to finish out my career. Can you send me to a web site? Thanks, David

Once at least bringing in a car made for Euro, had to get a few changes to be legal in the USA.

Some items needing to be changed on cars were windshields, removing head lamp wipers , head lamps that turned with steering, then later you could have that. Some lighting and sometimes light lenses, all to meet DOT spec.

Enjoy and congratulations. Look into shipping a BMW back to the US to sell. You might make some money. I've heard some stories along those lines but that was yrs ago.
