Tour bag advice?

If I have been good this year, I am hoping Santa will bring me a tour bag in January...

I traded my '99 Valkyrie Interstate for my '08 Nomad 1600. The I/S of course had a trunk so I have never looked into bags before. My Nomad has the Cobra luggage rack.

Any advice on a good tour bag or set for long hauls?

I have this Nelson Rigg tourpac & can't say enough good about it. If I lost it today, I'd buy another tonight!

The problem is the large passenger backrest pad and the tapered backrest support means not every possible bag will fit over the backrest. I had a T-Bags Tahoe bag that worked well, though.

I can't help with the tour bag, but congratulations on the Nomad. The Valkyrie Interstate is one of the sharpest bikes on the road, and is one of the only bikes I would consider trading my Nomad for.

cost effective luggage

Dowco makes a 4 piece set. It's a large bag with velcro and snap straps and several vecro 'd pouches. Then a small round bag that can be used separetly or attaches to top of large bag. Again it has velcro and snap straps and a zippered pouch. The other two pieces are a water proof liner for small bag (both bags listed as "water resistent" with out the liner) and a net style bungee cord. I have a 07 Nomad with the Cobra luggage rack and stock back rest and the large and small bags both fit individulally and as a unit on my bike. I use them a lot and after over 4 years they are still in good shape with no noticeable wear. Best thing is JC Whitney carries the set up for about $80 last time I looked.

I bought this computote bag by ktc a few years back and like it a lot. It is listed at $244, but royal distributing here in Canada has it for $195. The strap to go around the sissy bar is a little tough to get on, but I never use that. It comes with lots of quick adjust straps that hold it on fine.

I use this one, fit the Nomad backrest really well. Looks great, expands for extra capacity, can leave the top bag home if you don't need it, easy to put on and take off with snap clips, and reasonable price. Used it on several trips to Seattle and other points west. Great bag.

Get a Harley Tour Pak on there and be done. They are great.

As much as I dislike the look of a TourPak (any, not just HD), if I were to do much traveling (more than a weekend or so), I'd put a trunk on my bike in a minute. Can't beat the space.

This is what I have and really like it. Custom fit for the large passenger backrest the Nomad has.

Thanks Brother! It was hard to let go of the Interstate but it was an older bike (99) with a fair amount of miles on it and I was worried about eventual maintenance... alot of Valk wearable parts are getting in short supply and getting the six carbs cleaned ain't cheap! Plus the I/S is a bit top heavy in my opinion... something I will now be aware of if I ever go back to looking at full-fairing and hard-trunk dressers again. I am really enjoying the lower center of gravity on my Nomad!

That was my concern as well... that large Nomad passenger cushion. Hence this thread... I was worried about ordering a sissy bar bag and finding it wouldn't fit.

I do like the Tahoe. Good to know it works! All of the other posts have been great suggestions as well!

Good question! My wife has riding gear but she gets worn out by a hundred miles or so... so she probably won't be accompanying me on many weekender and rally trips.

Riding solo, is it better to use your luggage rack or mount your tour bag to the passenger seat? Does it make any difference in the ride?
