Shell Rotella on sale - Canadian Tire

So for all those getting their bikes ready for spring....

Shell Rotella is on sale at Canadian tire.
I picked up some 5w40sythentic (the blue jug) for $28.49 - savings of $9.50.
(I will have to compare this sale price with Wally world's next time I am there).

Yes, we pay too much for oil N of the boarder....

Why are we using 5w-40 when the manual suggests 10-40? I had also read in this forum to use the T6 Diesel oil. Why?

I bought a 20 litre pail last season at CT, its the Rotella dino oil but it was a good buy regardless, It should last me until the end of this season.

Thanks for the heads up. I have enough to Shell Rotella to do one more oil change so I will have to go pick up a couple of jugs.

Ringa - is there any benefit to using Dyna oil over the other stuff?

Raven - I am sure someone with more working knowledge will chime in, but I beleive the ability to use 5w40 (instead of the recommended 10-w-40) is because it is a synthetic oil. (gives you a wider operating range this way.

(jump in if I'm ff the mark anyone)

I use the dino oil only because its cheaper and does a pretty good job. Synthetic oils main benefit is that it can withstand higher operating temps for a longer period before breaking down. Nomads don't really run that hot here, and I change my oil regularly, If i lived in a very hot climate I may considor using it, Id would also leave it in the bike a lot longer than 3000 miles.

I do what Ringadingh does...shell dyno 15-40 I also change oil & filter at every 5,000 clicks (3000 miles) gr8 stuff!!
Only one thing I noticed, all the jugs has the JASO approved but the pale does not...what's up with that? I know it is the same oil,
just weird it does not have it labelled as such...:)
I also use the Purolator Pure 1 filters; I get half a dozen from the States.

Cheers
Guy

Try to find a motorcycle specific motor oil in anything other than 10-40 or 20-50. The 5 weight gives you better start up protection especially in cooler areas (I generally like that). As far as diesel oil, they don't have friction modifiers in them which are death to our clutches.

My guess is that they don't sell as many pails and it is older stock, the JASO certification on the Rotella packaging is fairly recent if I recall correctly.

I haven't run the Rotella dino in the Nomad yet but we've used it in every MX race bike we've run for as long as I can recall with great success.

I just asked my father (who vacations in Myrtle Beach, how much the SHELL is there in Walmart. It is $13.50/gal. What a steal. He is picking me up 4 jugs of it.

I like to break out the old girl (the nomad) as long as the roads are clear of snow - so the piece of mind I get from the 5w helps. And let's face it, I don't change the oil as often as I should - so a few extra bucks on the sythetic helps counter act my lazyness....
