Call me Easy Rider

I have been tossing an idea around in my head. An "Easy Rider"-like trip. Take a week off from work, load up the bike and go. No particular destination, just travel wherever I feel like. Find a motel when I get tired, stop and eat when I'm hungry.

If I want to do it this year, I'd better get going, otherwise I'll have to stick to the southern coast.

Just an idea at this point, but I'm close to actually doing it.

Scott,

I have had that same thought before. Someday.

Similar thoughts here, just doesn't seem to happen, not a good sign. Did do it a couple times many years ago with a small plane, great adventures to be had in either case. Be free young man! Probably don't want to do it with more than one, if that, riding companion, just not the same freedom.

Do It ! Sometimes the best destinations to go are not written in stone. There is always a certain amount of planning but plans can be just suggestions only . Have a great and safe journey wherever it takes you. DJ

At this point, I've only progressed from the "thinking about it" to the "thinking out loud" stage. If it is to happen this year, probably October.

Head to the east, stay on the south side, or not.

CJ, a lot of people kid me about my 250 mile or less days, there is a method to my madness. When I see a sign or something of interest I can take the time to go see it. You would be surprised how many days run out to 300 or 400 miles with the extra unplanned side trips. Something that just isn't possible if you actually try and cover 400 to 500 miles a day like many riders.

Typical example: Holbrook to Cortez is only around 270 miles. It took me 380 miles to get there with the side trip through Canyon de Chelly and a couple of other areas. I didn't plan the side trips, I just looked for something interesting to do along the route. Even went to a quilt show one year because I needed a break and it was something totally different.

Pick a direction and stop at the tourist information areas for suggestions Try and talk to the old grandmother type volunteers, they seem to come up with things to see that the younger crowd doesn't think to suggest.

Always try and pick something that is not in your normal pattern. Could be a thrashing bee, maybe a square dance festival, it might be something as simple as stopping to watch a parade. Spent six hours going to the Space Museum in Alamogordo, NM a few years ago. You need an excuse for a break and if you haven't planned for a long day there is plenty of time to relax. A good reason to keep the speed down so there is time to read the signs.

One thing I have found travelling this way. The idea that it will be just a short stop doesn't exist. It is real easy to spend a couple of hours or lose a half day when you don't have to be somewhere at a particular time.

Oh, leave the wrist watch in the saddle bag. Watch the sun and adjust the ride to get to a hotel in a reasonable time after the sun sets.

I hope you manage to get away Scott. I think I might do the same thing next year. Brian {midge} and I do a ride somewhere each year. It is nice to have another person/bike along with you. Maybe midge and I will just do the "easy rider" thing together instead of planning a trip. I'm thinking of a complete west coast trip down through So. Cal.. If you make it west to Northern WA. be sure to call or something and maybe we can meet up. It might be a little chilly for you by then though. Take care.
