Oil filter cap wrench?

What do you guys use to get the oil filter off? I use a strap wrench and it is crappy. Takes a long time to get the oil filter off of my 03 1500. Worse is that I cannot torque it with a strap wrench.

I heard there is a cap wrench out there that attaches to a wratchet. I tried a cap wrench but wratchet had no space. so, that didn't work ???

Oil filter cap wrench?

Sounds like the cap wrench did not fit the filter correctly. A correct fit up should leave room for the ratchet to be attached to cap wrench. I used mine this weekend and it worked like a champ. Get a new cap wrench and fit it to the filter you will be using.

I use my hand. It shouldn't be put on any tighter than hand pressure.

I think NAPA sells a large sheet metal type socket that goes on the flats on the end of the
filter. They might have an online catalogue ?

Oil filter cap wrench?

Cap wrench and 3/8 breaker bar to get it broke loose. Then remove by hand. New filter hand tight only no tool needed. My 3/8 ratchet with cap wrench would not fit very well between filter and goats bladder. Not all ratchet heads are the same size you know.

Oil filter cap wrench?

I bought and threw away 3 different kinds of cap wrenches. My ratchet would not fit in the space either.
I now use a strap to remove it and put it on hand tight.

Oil filter cap wrench?

I have a cap wrench but rarely use it now, I put my filters on by hand, and almost always can remove them by hand. Once in a while I need the wrench. and twice Ive needed every tool in the garage after I ran into difficulty with very tight filters. Ive learned how not to tighten them since.

Oil filter cap wrench?

I have bought numerous cap wrenches and all dont fit especially when your changing different brands of filters. Strap wrenches dont do anything but crush the filter and make yourself more work. A good pipe wrench is the only tool i have found that works and works well. BUT if you hand tighten only you wont need nothing but your hand. Live and learn.

I have a cap wrench that a rachet wrench fits on....got it for about $5 @ Wally World. Works great on the short Super Tech filter I use.

Oil filter cap wrench?

When installing an oil filter, NEVER use any kind of a tool to tighten it except your hand. Forget about the recommended torque value. Just screw it on until the rubber seal makes good contact and then turn from 1/2 to 3/4 of another turn.

It's entirely possible to tighten it so far with just hand pressure that it will take an act of God to get it off the next time you change oil.

Oil filter cap wrench?

I didn't find out if the bike still had the original stock exhaust, but I am still using the same cap wrench that I used with the stock exhaust. It fits Fram, Emgo and Purolator brand filters. Since I have an aftermarket exhaust, working room is not an issue and switched from the shorter filters to a longer filters. It is good advice to master "hand tight on (no tool installation) and hand tight removal". Always make sure to lubricate the rubber seal on the new filter prior to installation. A dry gasket will bond the filter on and make removal very difficult.

Oil filter cap wrench?

I use a cap wrench to take it off. Put it on hand-tight. It is a tight fit for the wrench. I have to put the cap fitting on, then insert the small socket handle I use to loosen it. I can't screw it all the way out with the handle on. I loosen it slightly, take the handle out, then finish taking it off by hand.

Probably would consider it awkward and irritating, but I had a Concours before this (C10). The filter was internal, and you had to take a bunch of tupperware off to change it. I glory in the simple, masterful design of this bike every time I change the oil. (Valve adjustments, or lack thereof, are an even greater delight!)

If you have ever had a Virago the Nomad oil change is a breeze, most of the time, lol.
