exhaust heatshield

G'Day All,

looks simple enough but can someone tell me how the chrome heatshield on the exhaust exiting from the head is mounted to the actual pipe please? (in particular at the engine end)
Mine is loose and rattling and can be moved off the top of pipe some 2 inches.
Appears from some diagrams it may have a hidden fixing point for the hose clamp to attach to but though it was worth asking the experts!

Cheers
mark

There's a little bracket spotwelded to the heatshield. The clamp goes through it and around the pipe. It sounds like your spotwelds have let loose.

Clamp just may be loose too. They're simply hose clamps

If he can move it 2", it's broken or the clamp's missing.

Went for aride last night, keep hearing a little raddling. I looked at the bike couple of minutes ago, and there it was the long shield holding by one fastener. Now if I go to the trouble of removing the pipe clamps and the main shield, you can bet the bugger wont do it again . I'll throw it away or weld it from the inside. Got to get it fixed today before, I head off tomorrow for the Blue ridge parkway and then through Shannondoa valley.

From all the horror stories I have read about V&H pipes lately I will be buying Cobras if I change pipes.

I think the horror stories are over rated John, i have V&H and no problems. I think if you ride 30,000 miles a yr yea maybe you might have trouble, if you put the pipe on slightly crooked.

Exactly! ..and I dont think the 30K miles/year would have any effect....too many of them out there working just fine...including mine ;) ;) ;) ;)

There is more to installing pipes correctly than most folks realize. If you buy V&H Baggers, they will need some hand fitting to get them just right. Once you do, they will last a long time.

People who have cracked the rear head pipe are probably cooking it to death, because their rear cylinder is running too hot/lean.
