Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
I’m in the process of changing my own tire (ME880 180/70-16). Breaking the bead was a chore (finally have that down), but getting it off the wheel wasn’t much of a problem. Getting it back on the first side was pretty easy, but the second side seems to be a real stretch.
For those mounting their own tires, have you found it more difficult to get the oversized rear tire on the rim? Is this just something everyone tends to send out to a bike shop to get mounted? Any tips, techniques or hints of advice? The Dynabeads should arrive Wednesday. TIA, Mac

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
I just did mine a week ago, and it was a lot harder getting the old tire off the rim, especially the second bead. New tire went on fast and easy. I mounted a Cobra 180/70HR16.

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
I suspect tire quality control is not what it could be. I used a tire machine to remove the old tire off my rear wheel and it wasn't too hard to come off. However, I put an OEM Bridgestone back on it and it was tough. It took about thirty minutes for the second bead to seat and seal. We put enough air pressure in it to lift the Titanic before it finally popped and hit the bead.

Don't know if your new tire was cold/cool....but an old trick is to lay it out in the sun or on some asphalt to warm it up so it is more plyable.

Be sure that when you are trying to get the second side on, that the opposite side of the tire is in the middle of the rim and not up on the bead edge. Also use lots of soap/tire lube on the tire.

Tood you rascal! Thats and old and very valuable tip!!!
A real warm tire is 10X easier to work with!! (That's why Todd takes a long hot shower before he tried to put his slacks on!!! )

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
Having been inducted into the tire changing hall of fame just this past weekend with Redeye, we learned the hard way. Here's how to solve your problem.
When mounting the second-side of the tire: lip your tire with the bar and run the bar 50% around the rim to the point where it gets tight (like you said), then flip the bar up and over the tire. Again flip the lever or bar away from you and towards the rubber part of the tire..... This is the part I forgot to read in the instructions .... Good luck man! |

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
Thanks guys. It is cool here, but not real cold (in Houston). Do yall use 3 spoons for this? I currently only have 2. I've done tire changes on my 1500 classic several years ago but not with an oversized tire and didn't know if that causes it to be more difficult to mount.
Received the DynaBeads last night - so now I just need to finish mounting the tire and get the beads in there so I can go for a ride. So sounds like the main tips are to warm up the tire and use plenty of lube, trying to keep the oppisite side of the tire in the middle of the rim. I knew about some of these tips, just wasn't sure if the larger tire was making it harder to keep in the middle of the rim while mounting - seems like it to me.

tiny ceramic beads that you can add inside the tire to replace weights. Its always in balance no matter how the tire wears. Works like a champ. :-)

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
The bead is usually really hard to break. I set the wheel out in the sun to warm it up spray some wd-40 on the bead and tap this in all around the bead works like a champ.

metzler are real tough. putting out in the sun is very good also cut some small blocks of wood and put them on under side of tire ,to make the tire go toward the center of wheel use tire lube and you should have no problem .or buy a nomar tire changer it makes life a whole lot easier.

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
I bought a bead breaker for $39.99 from Harbor Freight. It made breaking the bead very effortless.

Difficulty mounting 180/70-16 rear tire?
I went up to the 180/70 this time as well (Elite 3), but being mechanically reclined instead of inclined I let Discount Motorcycle Tire put mine on. They had it off, and the new one remounted in under a half hour including removing/replacing the bags while I had lunch across the street from the shop.
