Got a dog? What are you feeding him?

If you have a dog and you are feeding him/ her Beneful by Purina, you may want to read this:
http://www.abcactionnews.com/news/na...e-killing-dogs

We have two dogs in our family and both have been eating Beneful and one has in the past has had an incident of blood in the stool and vomiting, not sure if there is a connection or not. I was shocked to read that the ingredients does indeed contain propylene glycol. I am not sure if this is common in other dog food, or not but I intend not to take chances and will be looking at the ingredients of other brands and choose something different.

We feed ours Royal Canine for breakfast and my wife cooks them either chicken and rice or hamburger and rice for supper.

A lot of snacks and foods over the past couple of years have been blamed for killing quite a few pets.

Standard antifreeze contains ethylene glycol NOT propylene glycol. Two completely different chemicals.

https://www.beneful.com/frequently-asked-questions

Though many might not believe responses from the manufacturer of the dog food in response to the allegations I can tell you that prop glycol is used as a food additive in many many human and animal food products and has been for decades.

I feed my Black Lab dog "Wellness". It's an all natural dog food. It's a little pricey but worth it. Shiny coat, good eyes, healthy movements and he does not smell like a dog. He just turned 12 last week and he still likes to play. He only has to visit the vet once a year.

If I have pancakes in the morning he gets one, waffles the same deal.
No chocolate or anything I think will harm him.
Sometimes I let him drive my truck

Thanks for the information Norm. We have been feeding one of our miniature schnauzers Beneful for sometime now. Last time we were at the vets office she noticed Lucy has been losing weight and told us to keep an eye on her. I guess it's time to change food. Thanks again Norm.

Thanks and while you may be right, I prefer to avoid feeding it to my dog, or me if possible.

I only let him drive in the warmer seasons.
He loses control on ice and snow.

It appears to be a common additive in many things.

Applications
Forty-five percent of propylene glycol produced is used as chemical feedstock for the production of unsaturated polyester resins. In this regard, propylene glycol reacts with a mixture of unsaturated maleic anhydride and isophthalic acid to give a copolymer. This partially unsaturated polymer undergoes further crosslinking to yield thermoset plastics. Related to this application, propylene glycol reacts with propylene oxide to give oligomers and polymers that are used to produce polyurethanes.[4]

Propylene glycol is used as an humectant (E1520), solvent, and preservative in food and for tobacco products, as well as being one of the major ingredients of the "e-liquid" used in electronic cigarettes along with vegetable glycerin. Propene glycol is also used in various edible items such as coffee, ice cream, whipped dairy products, beer and soda.[7] Vaporizers used for delivery of pharmaceuticals or personal care products often include propylene glycol among the ingredients they are filled with.[4] Propylene glycol is used as a solvent in many pharmaceuticals, including oral, injectable and topical formulations, such as for diazepam and lorazepam which are insoluble in water.[8]

Like ethylene glycol, propylene glycol is able to lower the freezing point of water, and so it is used as aircraft de-icing fluid.[4][9] Water-propylene glycol mixtures dyed pink to indicate the mixture is relatively nontoxic are sold under the name of RV or marine antifreeze. Propylene glycol is frequently used as a substitute for ethylene glycol in low toxicity, environmentally friendly automotive antifreeze. It is also used to winterize the plumbing systems in vacant structures.[10] The eutectic composition/temperature is 60:40 propylene glycol:water/-60 °C.[11][12] The −50 °F/−45 °C commercial product is, however, water rich; a typical formulation is 40:60.[13]

Propylene glycol is a minor ingredient in the oil dispersant Corexit, which was used in the cleanup of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.[14][15]

Propylene glycol is used in veterinary medicine as an oral treatment for hyperketonaemia in ruminants. Glucose, which can be used in non-ruminants for this purpose, is not effective due to its consumption by the resident microbes of the rumen. Propylene glycol is partially metabolized in the rumen to propionate which can be used as an energy source. The remainder is absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the liver for gluconeogenesis.

I've always fed purina puppy chow without any problems. That being said I noticed my new Aussie puppy it was going in one end and pouring out the other. He stayed constantly hungry. Switched to Science diet and his poop is now solid enough for a good swing from a 7iron. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1424954146.125739.jpg

I know a guy who started a dog food wholesale business because of the research he did on off the shelf dog foods after his dog died. It was attributed to poor food. He carries a few different types but all the food & treats he carries are all natural. I went with Fromm's 4 star and yes it's pricey but seems to be very good for our very healthy 85 lb princess. We change up the type every few weeks to give a little variety.
