Motorcycle Jack

Heading to Bikletoberfest and wanted to check the air in my shocks, so yesterday I bought a gauge and air pump and I ran down to my brother in laws and got his motorcycle jack (Red Sears)-I always used this on my VTX, but I dont see a way to lift the rear tire off the ground with just the jack. I have no time to get an adapter-Idaho-Harbor Frieght.....etc...Right now....Any suggestions would be greatly aqppreciated!

Why can't you just lift the whole bike? The front wheel isn't going to fall off or anything.

It looks like the jack will not rest on the frame-Exhaust housing, oil case are lower then the frame...

I don't think most of us lift our bikes to check the air in the shocks---I know the manual says to, but then again it also says to run only high test gas. This has bee covered a few times. You might want to do a search.

So it's ok to adjust pressure, add air and rebound and not jack the bike up? DOH! Why dont I ask here first before reading the manuel?

You can lift it that way. I did it a couple of times before I ordered a jack adapter. If you position the jack far enough back, the front wheel will remain on the ground, especially if you're only lifting a couple of inches so the rear wheel clears the ground.

Or, you can adjust the air pressure in the shocks with the bike on the ground like most of us do.

my 05 has small frame extensions to put the jack under. The front wheel comes off the floor much sooner than the rear but the rear tire does come off the floor. When the rear tire comes off the floor the jack can feel kind of tippy so I put a strap from one side on the jack run it over the engine guards and attach it to the other side on the jack. That secures the bike so there's no chance of the jack turning over. I have the red sears floor jack too.

The manual ::) says that so both shocks will get the same psi.

ie: you raise the bike, and pull the valves, then put them in, and lower the bike.

The shocks just both took the same air.

Thats fine so long as you want apx 10 psi.

You can do the same thing with a good meter and hand pump if you are very careful.

Or you be be a fool and fill only one place for both shocks at the same time (My way)

I made that set up last spring with a gauge mounted to the bike. I set it at 10psi then and it reads 8 psi today, but today is far colder.

I recently bought a pump for my shocks. I have a lift so I elevated the back wheel to add air as the manual states and set each shock at five (5) pounds. Out of curiosity, I checked the pressure again after the bike was back on the ground and it showed an additional 2.5 pounds. What I don't know if this is a fixed constant at all pressures. In other words, if I put 15 pounds in each shock would it then show 17.5 on the ground?

Save yourself a lot of grief. Do what Mac did, install an equalizer line, gauge and one easy to get to valve..no more geussing, no headaches either. When I was running the stockers thats what I did and I always knew what I had in there for air. Also if you want to change your style of riding for twisty mountain roads..add more air to firm up and remove air when just cruising along the flats. For a small cost to set it up, its well worth it....Bdog
