Dunlop SP 5000 Car Tire: Update

I checked TiresEasy.com last night and noticed that they still have over 40 of the 195/60-16 tires in stock. My tire still has plenty of wear left but I was thinking about ordering another to have on hand when the time comes to replace mine. Does anyone think it's a bad idea to have a replacement tire for a year or two kept in a climate controlled room with no sunlight? I like this tire and don't want to risk not being able to get another one when I need it.

That's a good idea. I don't know the answer to the storage question, though. I'd be interested in finding out.

Dunlop SP 5000 Car Tire: Update

There is a manufactured date code on the side of each tire made. Be careful of tires more than 2 years old (be careful of Sam's et. al.) before their use date. There are liquids involved in the manufacture of tires that keep them pliable for several years. As this liquid migrates out of the compound the tire gets the typical "Dry Rot" appearance. I don't think any storage facility will keep the tire from dis-intergrating over time as the compounds leach out of the tire.

Thanks Bear. I would have to order the tire and there is no way of knowing the date code stamped on it until I receive it. It could be a year or two old already. I like this tire and the way my Nomad handles with it. I've read and was told by a local retailer that Dunlop has discontinued this tire because of little demand for it.

Dunlop SP 5000 Car Tire: Update

Heat plays a major role in the degradation of tires. If you live in a hot climate (AZ, CA, NV, TX, and FL), expect your tires to degrade faster than in a cooler climate.

The NHTSA did a study back in '07 on age-related failures of car tires and found that those over 6 years old represented 84% of tire-related claims for 2007.

The age of tires can be determined by checking the identification number on the sidewall that begins with the letters "DOT." The last four digits represent the week and year the tire was manufactured.

I think your climate controlled room would help a little for your climate, but if you buy the tire and intend to store it unused for a year or two, I would definitely have it professionally inspected before mounting it on the bike.

Dunlop SP 5000 Car Tire: Update

I checked with the tire and wheel company next door to my shop and they said that you
should check the date on the tire. A tire is good for 5 years so depending on the
manufacture date 2009 or 2010 it can be stored for a couple of years with no problem.

I personally wouldn't do it. I too like my sp5000 and when it wears out I might replace it with the same tire. If it's not available, I'm not worried about trying another brands. jmho

There's not much demand, we use them 1 at a time and they last a long time. We need less work so we could get more miles. Who has replaced their's besides dkdixie?

Have you thought about shrink wrapping it for storage?
I have the General Atimax on mine and love it. Tried to find a Dunlop but nobody had one and I needed a new tire quickly.

Altimax was my next choice if I couldn't find an SP. That or GY TT. I was apprehensive about going to the 205 with the tight clearance issue. How is your Altimax doing and how many miles have you rolled up on it?

Don't remember where I read this but I do remember that long term tire storage invloved a large sealed garbage bag in a cool place.

Try googling "Tire Storage"

Dunlop SP 5000 Car Tire: Update

I sent Dunlop an email asking how long I could store the SP 5000 in an opaque garbage bag in a climate controlled room. As soon as I receive a reply, I will post it.
