Grand Canyon Ride

As one of the ride leaders to the Grand Canyon Ride I've researched the surrounding viewing area and found a nice web page.

The road we will be taking south from Kanab is 89 south to 67. This road ends at the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim. There will be some spectacular scenery for sure as well as a short trial hike (30 minutes) for anyone interested (I am) called Bright Angel Point. I've enclosed the web page so you can read and start dreaming..

It's not a very difficult hike, mostly flat ground. The view from the point is magnificent and is well worth the short hike to get there.

I've been to the canyon several times. Thought it's more remote the north rim is by far my favorite. It snowed while I was there in early Sept 3 yrs ago so always have something warm to put on!

I've been checking the weather in Kanab and to the North Rim ride. Kanab is 5002 feet so it rather cool (40's) at night and about mid 70's to 80 in the day time at the end of May. The ride to the North Rim will take us up to almost 9,000 feet in elevation so it will be cool all the time.. Keep that in mind when you ride up there.

Those that have heart conditions or other respiratory ailments should consider your losing 1/3 your oxygen. Altitude sickness affect 1 in 10 at that level.. Those that come early enough to Kanab at 5000 ft. should be acclimated enough that you shouldn't have a large concern.

Altitude sickness is serious. I took a turn around one year to Mammoth Ski resort and we raced up there and took the ski lift to the top of the mountain and sat down in the coffee-rest-food restaurant at the top and passed out. It was 11,000 ft. but let me tell you, not fun ...It's a new "sickness" you've never felt before! Trust me.. it'll ruin your vacation.

Just some FYI as I was reading on my leading the ride to the North rim and hadn't realized how how up it was.. higher than the south rim I visited 2 years ago.

I had a similar experience on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park several years ago. We stopped at a visitors center at around 13,000', I got out of the car, took a few steps, and the parking lot suddenly tilted about 45° on me. I grew up at 4800' in Salt Lake City and used to spend a lot of time in areas 7000'+, but I guess years of living at 1200' in Phoenix took their toll.

Well then Kris and I are really screwed. My house is at 200 feet above sea level. A friend who has been through Mountain Warfare talked about taking aspirin to thin the blood a bit and help with altitude sickness.

Well, we are at 4600 feet so this will be no problem. One of the best things for altitude sickness is keeping hydrated. Also, no alchohol, that's a good one. ;)

I just want all of us to be prepared to have a great time at the canyon! I'll bring aspirin as Charlie pointed out and gatorade to drink.
