Idle speed changes

BD,

I have an idle problem (maybe) that I hope you can help me with. I have an '06 with under 3K miles. I've added the V&H baggers, Fi2000R and Thunder air kit. The bike starts with the choke on very nicely. The choke fast idle works fine. After the motor warms up for a few minutes and I take off the choke, the bike idles at extremely low rpm. It stays that way for about 15 to 20 min on riding. I've been upping the idle screw to make it idle better but it's nearly bottomed out.

After riding for about 20 min., the motor idles way too fast. I usually unscrew the idle screw a bit and then it idles ok.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Tomk

Idle speed changes

I have had my 06 for 17 months and ridden in temps from low 30's to 100+ and have never once used the fast idle knob (mislabeled "choke" for some reason by the OEM) for start up or anything else

I also have an '06. It always starts up but when it is VERY cold it idles rough. Pulling the fast idle knob out and letting it warm up for a little while helps it. And can't see how adjusting the idle screw could be necassary since the fast idle knob raises the idle considerably. Mine is totally stock so maybe all the all your mods are making it act up. Mine seems to idle about the same all the time (maybe a little on the low side)

It idles just a little quicker when cold but settles down after a minute or two. no more than 200 turns or so though.

tomk, your fuel processor is causing the weird idling.

Couple of questions for you:

You state you added the Thunder Air Kit. These don't allow the use of the fast "cold idle" solenoids to be mounted and the new backing plate so how is your "fast Idle" working? All that is unplugged and capped when a Thunder kit is installed? Are you referring to using the manual fast idle knob on the front downtube of the frame?

BD,

Yes, I'm talking about the fast idle knob on the left downtube. When I pull it out, the idle speeds up and the motor runs fine when cold. The low rough idle only happens after I disengage the fast idle knob.

How can I correct the problem with the fuel processor?

Now that I've heard the feedback from others, I'm sure something isn't right. But I have no idea how to correct it.

Thanks,

Tomk

Yes BD. That is what tomk is doing. With my hypercharger on, I use the manual nob when needed. I have also started to leave it pulled just a bit. Since all it does is lift up the cam on the throttle cable. This way if I need a bit more or less RPM, depending on the weather, I use the manual nob instead of the throttle adjusting screw.

What tomk needs to do is remove the FI2000. He is running rich with the Thunder air kit. Since the ECU is always trying to adjust to the air temperature, the warming and cooling will cause a little more or less fuel out of the injectors and that will be the same as if you have the throttle cranked just a bit. Thus higher RPM.

I just read about jlamz problems with the cobra fi2000. Do you think that my settings are way too rich and causing the problems I'm having with the idle?

I also have it on the recommended settings of 3, 5, 0.

Before I put on the air kit, I had it at 2 1/2, 4, 0 and it ran fine with stock intake.

Cleaning up the trottle bores and butterfly valves solves almost the problems. Mines idles at 950 rpm as a suiss wallclock.

Stock intake, V&H baggers and a PCIII (great performance!)
