Damn Garage Door...

I saw a post on here a few weeks ago about how to solder a push button to a garage door opener. It was concealed inside the left side panel (where the tool kit is). I am thinking about doing the same thing, but I am not enthusiastic about drilling a hole into the bike and am looking for somewhere else that I could put a little push button switch that wouldn't look bad.

I am just getting really sick of having to take the door opener out of my car, put it in my pocket, carry with me the whole day, etc. A custom switch for the bike would be great, but like I said...don't really want to drill a hole (tiny it may be) in the side panel.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Brian

The left neck cover (just forward of the fuel tank) is a good place for a push button. The cover is also only $6-$7 if you decide later you want to replace it with a new one.

Not to over simplify the problem, but why not just buy another remote opener? Just leave it with the bike or in a windshield bag or something similar. Just my $.02.

If I purchased another opener than I still have the same hassle of having to carry it with me all the time.

I thought about a windshield bag, but when I tested it out I found that it got in the way of my homemade parking decals plate. I work on a military base, and they require that your motorcycle (or car) have the damn parking decals on it. I didn't want to stick 5 large stickers on my chrome forks, so I stuck them to an index card, laminated it, and then put a magnetic strip on the bottom of the card. When I pull up to the base, I put the card on the metal part of the windshield.

Therefore, the windshield bag gets in the way of putting on and taking off the stickers. It's not a big hassle, but you get the point.

I built a control box for my aux light switch, aux horn switch and my voltage display. I just added the momentary switch and the door opener itself to the control box. (just does fit). Will post a picture later today when I get off work

Yeah, a picture would be great. Sounds like a nice little project to keep me busy for a little while.

Thanks,

Heck with work. Here is a photo with the power on so you can sorta see the led next to the switch for the garage door opener. Got the project box from Radio Shack and made up the attachment to the bars.

Thanks for the pic. It would be great to find a little project box like that with a chrome finish that maybe had an ABS front panel.

I will have to do some searching around to see what I can find. I want to get the chrome neck cover, so I am against drilling into the neck right now, as it will soon be covered.

I mounted the switch to my under carriage lights on the bottom side of my left side cover. You can not see them at all and you just have to bend over a little to get to it. Hey, you can see my nice new darkside tire hidden in there :)

I have a keychain garage remote that I keep on the ring with my bike keys. It has 3 buttons, so I can open either of our garage doors with it.

I'm working on a remote controlled beer fetcher for the 3rd button.

I've got a Golden retriever that retrieves my beers and brings them to me in a foam insulator.

I took the easy way.
Wrapped extra garage door remote in plastic, then duck tape and with 3M double sided tape, attached to inside of left saddlebag.
Works great.

Don....I like that idea of a switch under the side cover....but I am pretty dumb....having a hard time figuring out how it all goes together and where the "sensor" is that communicates with the opener? Can you expand the details a little?

Thanks

This might help....I followed this process for the most part from Gadget's site. It involved disassembling an opener and soldering two wires on the board in the opener and placing the switch.

Strobe sums it up pretty good. That website just about covers it all. It does not have a 'sensor' per say as it is done by radio waves and has an internal antenna so you can pretty much mount it up anywhere and it should work. If you take the oppener appart, and take a good picture of the back side of the cicuit board, I can mark on the photo where to solder in the switch. If you do that, send a picture of both front and back side.
