Anyone Interested in a Russell Day Long Group Buy?

UPDATE:

Okay... Attention! All hands on deck!

As of today, 11/09/12, 12:00 CST the RDL 2013 group buy list is officially closed.

Kim came through for us with a couple of alterations to how they have done group buys in the past. RDL will honor the group buy effort, but will not restrict themselves to following the group buy list's order.

Basically what this means is... the fact that you are number two on the group buy list means nothing as to how your order will be received and processed by RDL.

Here is the direction given by RDL:

RDL will process orders in the order the company receives them.

Orders must be placed online or by fax (fax number is 530-275-5465) between November 26, 2012 and November 30, 2012. Orders will be accepted between those dates only. No phone orders will be accepted. NO EXCEPTIONS! Orders dated before or after those dates will not be accepted for the group buy. NO EXCEPTIONS!

The group buy is open to all makes and models of motorcycles, but will be limited to the first 125 orders received. Only new seat orders will apply, no rebuilds or recovers will be accepted. ONLY ONE ORDER PER CUSTOMER WILL BE ALLOWED! NO RIDE IN APPOINTMENTS ALLOWED!

You must specify on the order where it says production date, "GROUP BUY 2013". Orders without this will not be scheduled under the group buy. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Production dates will be scheduled in December and January only. NO EXCEPTIONS OR RESCHEDULING! Dates will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis and you will be notified by email of your scheduled date for the "Group Buy 2013" once the order is received.

Discount for the group buy is 20% off the seat order. DOES NOT INCLUDE SHIPPING!

You must send RDL your stock seat for the new build by your scheduled production date. RDL does not have seat pans available.

Well... there you go. I want to thank everyone for their patience as we worked through this process.

In closing, I want to remind each of you that your position on the group buy list does not guarantee that you will be receiving the group buy discount. The first 125 group buy orders will be determined by the order they are received, NOT YOUR POSITION ON THE LIST. I just want to make that that very clear, so there’s no misunderstanding.

For the last several years someone on one of the many bike forums across the web solicits Russell DL for a group buy of their seat builds during the off-season. To date Russell has accepted one group buy a year and the builds normally begin around December - January.

Last year a fellow from the GL1800 forum started one and the year before that someone from the FJR1300 forum started one. Russell will generally offer discounts in relation to the number of seats the group buy can generate. 100 seats or more and they give a 20% discount. They normally place a cap at around 100 to 125 orders so the first 100+ people that contact the forum organizer is placed on a list which is ultimately sent to Russell.

When Russell sets the date to order, people on the organizer's list call or go to Russell's website and place their order with the mention of being part of the group buy. Russell checks the list provided by the forum's organizer and if the person ordering is on the list - discount up to 20% off on the entire purchase. That's pretty huge for a seat in the price range of a RDL.

I bought my last RDL in the group buy last year on the GL1800 forum. The seat was for my FJR1300. You do not have to own the brand specific bike of the forum that starts the group buy. Just be one of the first 100 or so that confirms they are in. Russell could care less what brand bike you are sending the seat in for. The forum organizer doesn't either because he/she wants to make sure they get their 100 orders for the maximum discount.

Just Google Russell Day Long Group Buy and you'll find threads of prior forum group buys. The guy on GL1800 forum started hitting people up on the idea in August last year. Here's a link to that thread:

http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showt...97%97Group-Buy

I have not found any mention of a RDL group buy on the web yet and I'm seriously considering organizing one through this forum for 2012. So this is your opportunity to speak up if you would be interested in joining a RDL group buy. If interest is high, I'll contact Russell and see if they will entertain our request!

I get nothing out of this other than joining you in the possibility of a 20% discount on a great seat build. No money passes through the organizers hands. All transactions are completed directly through Russell at the time of order. If you are unfamiliar with the Russell Day Long seat, just Google it or go to their website at:

http://www.day-long.com/

I am not affiliated with RDL in any way.

NOTICE:

If you are interested in joining the list for the Russell Group Buy, I need you to do the following:

Send me a private message with

1. Your name.
2. Your email address.
3. Year, make and model of your bike.

I will respond to your private message and advise you of your number on the list. I will not add you by forum user name alone. You must provide the information requested above.

I will contact Russell on Monday to see if they will entertain our request for a group buy this year.

I'm not promising anything, but will give it my best effort to see this come to reality. Russell dragged the GL1800 Forum out to November last year before they would commit so don't be impatient with me.

Thanks,

Mike Williams

Here's some pictures of my RDL on my FJR1300:

They kinda look too soft, but I've never seen one in person so I may be completely wrong. Soft isn't something I want out of a motorcycle seat

Anybody had a Vaquero seat done? Share some pics? :???:

coacha 09-28-2012 02:26 PM

I would be willing to jump on this for sure.

RDL seats are among the top 3, if not the #1, custom seats available for long riding. I have seen countless RDL's on IBA member bikes and long distance riding enthusiasts. There are a number of people on the VBA board that have them and will probably chime in about the seat quality and improved rideability.

I'm in for one for my ST1300. Hope you can make it happen.

Mike,

What material is that on your FJR seat? I don't see it as an option on the RDL site. Does it improve, ahem.. airflow?

redjay 09-28-2012 04:48 PM

I am interested in RDL seats for my Voyager.

Dang! I just put on my new Ultimate seat today. Gonna have to give this some serious thought.

fammdw 09-28-2012 07:24 PM

The material is vinyl. The pattern is basket-weave. They do not show this option on the Russell website, but I saw a picture of one done like this on a BMW. When I called Russell and asked about it, they said they would do the basket-weave for no additional cost.

The seat does have a very nice "airflow"! :D

I could be interested...

Mine is anything, but soft Duff. Firm, supportive, but not hard feeling like Corbins can be.

Well... we're off to a slow roll so far. We have nine people on the list so far. I am going to reach out on some other forums I'm a member of and provide the link to this thread. The guy on the GL1800 forum did this last year and his list blew up from 14 to 177. Get your name in early!
