If you have dino oil, not synthetic in the bike you can top it up with any motor oil as long as its not an energy conserving oil. Its sounds like valve noise to me, or it may be the cam chains rubbing if you have a few miles rung up on the bike.
Some engines get a little more clatter to them if they are low on oil, top it up and see if it goes away. |

Copied from another website:
"All XXw-20 and XXw-30 oils are energy conserving, and should not be used in your motorcycle. 10w-40 oils should not be used in a motorcycle that runs the engine oil through the transmission." Now, my opinion: My opinion is to drain, replace the filter, and fill with Rotella-T Synthetic 5w-40. I had no idea what was in mine when I bought it with 10,500 on it, but as soon as I put Rotella-T Synthetic 5w-40 in it I could tell an immediate difference (less noise). |

I can hear it ok. I am told that these gret bikes are just noisy period. If you read gadgets page it says the same thing. Just a Nomad being a Nomad?

Knock, Knock....
Sounds like the solenoids to me. Take the right, chrome, dog bowl off and see if the sound becomes a lot louder.
|
Knock, Knock....
sounds like a normal Nomad to me. It could be the solenoids. use syn oil and it helps.

I agree with formikec.......change the oil to Rotella Syn 5w-40.

I am inclined to agree on the oil. I don't know what the dealer used on mine last year but this year when I did it I used dino because I couldn't find a synth that I was happy with and it is noisier than before. Mine is not as loud as yours but makes the exact same sound now. you may try to clean the throttle bodies as well. It may run a little smoother.

If it is energy conserving oil it will say so on the label, Not all oil is.

If the bike in question has a stock intake set up it is pointedly clackey. The idle control solenoids are wicked clackety. These sound like out of sequence and very loose valves on a engine with solid lifters.... These ISc's make noises mostly on a cold start, and the at hot idle when ever they feel like it.. Mine live in a card board box in the cellar with a lot of other heavy useless junk that came OFF the bike! |

For what it's worth sounds a lot like mine on a cold start. Mine is a 2002 1500FI with 20,000 kilometers

Hi. My 2001 1500 with 28000 KM sounds the same. It is most noticable with stock exhaust and intake. Thinking that the cam chain adjusters needed replacement ,I checked them and found them near their end of travel. (see Gadgets site) I then installed cam chain extenders. The Noise did not change.
I then electrically disconnected the valves in right side air cover. The noise did not change. Reconnected same. From other posts ,it is suggested that the counterbalance rubber dampers may be worn. Check Utube for videos on nomad for engine noise. I have yet to do this fix as the noise is not as bad yet and it appears it may be a bit of work to do this fix. Anyone with further suggestions would be appreciated. Asside from this noise the bike runs great and only occurs near Idle. Purhaps PO used Harler parts. LoL. Thanks. |

put the 5w-40 rotella t in her...the knocking has softened but is still there.....she shifts mo-betta though;)
