RacnRay Throttle mod

Well after much reading and wondering plus AZCruzer's pressure I bought and installed RacnRay throttle for my Vaq. I really was somewhat skeptical but, I thought, I could always keep the stock throttle and send the mod back if it didn't work. Well the throttle showed up yesterday and I installed it this morning ----must have taken 10-15 minutes and his instructions (on another forum) were excellent! Took the bike out and I was amazed that such a simple fix made such a difference. I have to say that lagging throttle is no longer and it is quite easy to hold a low rpm steady throttle without having the jerky movement that I had had previously. I also notice a big difference on starting out from a dead stop in traffic, I guess I hadn't previously realized how much "lag" there was.
I do not work for or know this man or sell for him or have any other connection other than I bought this throttle mod. I am very, very pleased!

Sounds like ray has a believer LOL

I installed mine last week too. Amazing difference in feeling of control and power. -I'm a believer too

we used to modify our throttle's all the time on the old Z1's
never really thought about doing it to my nomad till you guys started talking about it. Think I will modify one and see how it works

I had it done. I was amazed how well the bike performed afterward. I also did the air temp sensor relocation from the air box to the frame neck area. Got rid of the lean mixture on this bike. Did loose 1-2 mpg but a good trade off.

what mod are you talking about? And is this just for the Vaquero?

Apparently it can be done to all the Vulcan Baggers. Ray checked the part numbers of the throttle grip and they're all the same (1500 through 1700s)

It's a modification to the throttle cable track on the throttle tube of the grip. It increases the responsiveness of throttle movement, and gives the bike a better feel.

Here's another entire thread with more info and testimonies of Ray's work:

I think it's just for the FBW ('09+) bikes. On the older bikes (1600s at least), you can just tighten the throttle cables. I have zero slack in my cables and the response is as crisp as it's going to be on a Nomad.

dmyers 05-13-2012 08:09 AM

That could be
We did it to shorten the throttle turn it was a cheap 1/4 turn throttle.

jp58 05-13-2012 11:34 AM

If you remove the cover to the throttle plates on the FBW 1700 and run the engine with stock throttle. The plates do not open right away when you turn the throttle. That is the lag and the jerkyness you get at part throttle. Racnrays mod fixes that. The plates open right away as soon as you twist the throttle. You cannot adjust the stock throttle to remove the lag. You need this mod.

The mod is done to the throttle grip itself, so if you have any inclination of changing out the stock grips, do it at the same time. I bought some Avon air cushions from Ray and he modified the throttle grip before shipping them out. A one stop shop!
Ray will chime in as he always does, but here's his info:

HEY GUYS...

I have been gettin enuff requests for my quick turn throttle mod for the 1600/1700/2000 Vulcans that i have decided to produce these and offer them for sale.

I checked Kawi's part numbers and my mod fits ALL years 1700 and 2000 Vulcans and 2008 1600 Nomad. There may be other Vulcans this mod will fit, i will have to have samples to see. The OEM Kawi part # for the grip is 46019-1109 so please double check the part nmbr for your skoot. This mod IS APPLICABLE to Kuryakyn AND avon grips. If you are considering changing grips at the same time i can supply your choice of grips already modified. Let me know and i can supply pricing. This mod can be performed on Kuryakyn and Avon grips.

ANYWAYS....i have one stock throttle in stock already modded, and i'll try to have at least one more ready to go. I will be setting up an ordering process as follows...

You send me your throttle tube/grip, i will mod it and send it back, cost will be $59.00 PLUS the cost of ground shipping via USPS to the 50 states only. I only ship via usps due to convienence, but they have already lost 2 throttle grips. I suggest that you ship your grip and i will only be shipping back via "insured and signature required".

If you DO NOT want your skoot down waiting for the throttle, then you can order a tube from me. I will ship it out asap, you will then ship your tube to me. A core charge" will be charged in the amount of $47.00 in addition to the $59.00 at the time of order (this is to cover my cost in replacing the tube if i don't get one back). When i recieve your GOOD USABLE grip back i will credit back your card $42.00 ($47.00 less $5.00 service charge).

If i recieve a damaged core that i cannot use, then i will not be able to refund the core charge. If I don't reieve a grip back in 15 days, there will be an additional $5.00 service charge. If I DO NOT recieve a grip back in 30 days, the core charge is forfeited.

SO...i hope i have not confused anyone as i felt it was necessary to offer two types of ordering. Any one wanting quicker than ground service will be charged accordingly.

This is a simple mod to perform, some mechanical experience is necessary for proper installation, i will be glad to offer technical support over the phone. No other mods are needed, no tuning ,etc. Acceleration will be improved, especially in the lower rpm/throttle position areas.

I hope this pm finds everyone well and hungry for more MOJO, I was very happy with the improvement on my skoot.

You may call me directly at the shop...954-455-9665,
Tue-Fri 9-6:30 (closed for lunch 2-3 pm) and Sat 9-3 all day, Florida time.

VISA,M/C,DISCOVER,AM/EX accepted.

THANX ALL
RACNRAY

OK, I'm confused. I thought this mod was for Fly by wire bikes only, But Ray mentions the 2008 Nomad as well, which is cable.

They are all cable driven. Even the 1700 FBW has 2 cables to the throttle body, we will say left side. From there it drives an electronic servo motor on the right side of the throtle body. That opens the throtle plates. The mod fixes the 1700 lag the computor gives. From what ray says it will give the 1600 and 2000 a quicker throttle turn. Not really fixing a lag just a quick turn response.

sacarriker 05-13-2012 08:40 PM

And how much does this mod cost?
