Is it just me, or is the contact patch pretty darn good on the CT, in many cases better than the MC tire?
Great videos!

It certainly looks pretty good to me, He didn't seem to baby it around the corners either.

cool camera perspective. wonder about CT sidewall strength for cornering compared to MT.

You can actually hear the difference between the motorcycle tire and the car tire in the noise the tread makes on the pavement.

That camera angle was great!
It looks like the contact patch is pretty good, but what concerns me is on cornering, it is clearly on one side or the other. It was real clear with the rain groove. While the contact patch is good, I would be concerned with the uneven stresses put on the belts of the tire. When on a car, isn't the entire tread patch on the road and the sidewall flexes on cornering?
Maybe it's OK, and all who've done it may have had good experience with it, but I don't think it's for me.

It is super nice to see both a ct and mt one right after another.

Another question.....I understand that the larger the contact patch the more surface to grip the road, but 10 years back most large goldwings, harleys etc had smaller back tires than we use now for front tires, right? Does that mean that they didn't have as good grip on the road?

Those are pretty neat videos. I like looking (and listening) to the two of them, and seeing the differences.

Here's some more information to digest.
"Durometer" reading of various popular car tires being used on motorcycles.
Note the comment on harder compound of OEM M/C tires.
This is information available on Darkside forum:
A Durometer measures the softness of tire rubber, the softer the tire the lower the number.
Durometer Readings: (all readings taken on same meter)
BFG Touring TA 67 Goodyear Triple Tread 69
General Altimax HP 61 General Exclaim 63
Nexan 2000 68 Continental Conti Pro Contac 64
Dunlop Sport 5000 62 Bridgestone Potenza EL400 61
Firestone F560 68 FuzonZRI 67
General Diamonback 66 Riken Raptor 60
Falken Ziexx 512 60
99% of all OEM rear M/C tires were 69-72

I like this site...clearly shows the way most people look at this without any research....

This was one of the main resources I consulted back in 2007 when I was contemplating switching to a car tire. After reading Daniel's, and others, experiences I had no doubt about the validity of using a car tire on a motorcycle. I have now put 8000 miles on my car tire and I will never change back to a M/C rear tire.
As does Daniel Meyer, I have no interest in trying to change anyones mind about whether a car tire will "work."
To put it plainly, if someone feels that using a car tire on a motorcycle is not safe, or just can't work, that is of no concern to me. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as am I. My opinion is just that, my opinion. I am not so egotistical that I will make any claim that my opinion is more valid than that of anyone else.
What it boils down to is that everyone has to make up their own mind what they are comfortable with. No one has the right to force their opinion on anyone else.
If the thought of having a car tire on your motorcycle makes you uncomfortable, then to put on a car tire would be the wrong thing for you to do.

Daniel Meter's article was a strong factor in convincing me to try a CT.
That and following Yellow Jacket one day......
I agree with your comments Bob.
I'm looking forward to the S/E Rally this weekend. I believe there will be at least 4 bikes there with car tires. You, me, goose, and itsemt for sure.
There seems to be a lot of current interest in going to the Darkside.
The information is out there for those that want to do the research.....then its a personal decision.

I agree!!!! anyone who has asked me about it, i tell them to get informed. i know what it does for me, and doing the research, im not concerned about it. i havent seen one of us yet, tell someone to just go out and do it cuz we did, and i dont think you will. anything you do with your ride always should be your own personal decision. whether that be accessories, bling, mods, or ct,s !
Btw. i did not limit my research to only nomad riders who have gone to the darkside. even tho they are different bikes and handle different, i read what the goldwings, yamaha, suzuki, and everyone else who has done this said about doing this.

I agree 100% Bob, dkdixie, and lonewolf. Everyone needs to research this for themselves and make an informed intelligent choice. Never substitute someone elses judgment for your own!

Ah, the mythical 10% the drill instructors always alluded to in boot camp!
Personally, I have a new Cobra on the rear wheel, so I have several months before I'll need a new tire. I'm 95% sure I'll go darkside, I'm going to check out BD's setup going to Custer, and that should be enough convincing for me.
