U go zoom45. 31 years is great. Any end in sight? I have served 31 years in law enforcement counting my 3 years of MP time in the Army. I probably would have re-up'ed if they hadn't told me that they were going to send my overseas again. Half my service was already overseas and it was time to stay home and get serious about a Mrs.

USMC - September 72 - November 76. Didn't make it to Vietnam. I traveled for several years (2001-2007) and used to see a lot of first class seats given to service people. I couldn't travel in uniform as you would be singled out and ridiculed.

Thanks to all vets!

I couldn't travel in uniform as you would be singled out and ridiculed.

I never had that experience (in '68-'69).

Traveled "stand-by" in uniform. At worst, no one paid attention. At best, was treated with respect.

Went to a race track (horse racing) in New Jersey one time in uniform and a guy bought me a hot dog.

US Army 67-72. Got put in language school, became fluent in German and, from atop "Devil's Mountain" in West Berlin -- the "iron bar in the jaws of communism" -- got to listen to the East German government for 2.5 years.

Don't remember ever being treated with disrespect because of my uniform (ignored, like someone said earlier).

Riding with the Patriot Guard has restored my link to an experience that opened horizons that I would have never known existed had I not become a "draft-induced volunteer." (Admittedly, I didn't fully appreciate the experience at the time, being, as mentioned, a "draft-induced volunteer").

My father, a U.S. Marine, received Purple Hearts in WWII and in Korea-- sniper bullet in the back in Okinawa and a land mine in Korea. Every year, my awe of the Marine tradition increases.

To anyone who has served, is serving, or intends to serve our country-- thank you.

I went to aviation maintenance school at NAS Memphis in Millington, TN. A Marine's wife and kids were injured in a car accident, so they organized a blood drive at one of the big hospitals in downtown Memphis. In the service, if you donate blood, they give you a day off - so this was a no-brainer. We had to wear our service uniforms since we were going into town. Marines can't wear combat duds off base. They loaded us into buses and drove us the 25 miles or so to Memphis.

It also happened to be payday. They told us after we had donated, we could leave the hospital and go cash our checks. I remember just walking down the sidewalk, getting called names. This was a few years after Vietnam, and I'm sure the crap I got was nothing compared to what the Vietnam vets received. It really pissed me off, though - I thought I was doing the right thing by serving my country and these local idiots were calling me names. I was barely 18 and still a little wet behind the ears back then.

I've done a copy and paste from a military email that I subscribe to. I thought the comments made were worth passing on.

***********************
Air Force officials honored America's veterans during a Hampton Roads Air Force Week ceremony April 20 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex arena.

Retired Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Robert D. Gaylor, the guest speaker, shared his thoughts for those who served and for those who continue to serve in the U.S. military.

"The big difference I see in the world today is how we define our heroes," said the fifth chief master sergeant of the Air Force. "Some people think that a hero is some guy who can dunk a basketball or throw a fast ball at 93 mph and pitch a no-hitter. Those are highly skilled athletes.

Heroes in my book are those who put on the uniform and respond to the call," he said, "and go do what they're asked to do; not for the glory and the thanks but because they took an oath. Every so often, we need to stop and reflect on what has made (America) so great and salute the veterans. Most veterans appreciate it. They don't need a lot of praise, but they like it."

Though all that have answered the call are to be saluted and thanked, I would like to offer special thanks all who have put and continue to put themselves in harms way, thousands of miles from their loved ones all around the globe. And I hope that one day soon Vets returning home will be remembered for their service and receive the treatment and respect they deserve from the country they bravely served.

Government isn't so bad if you compare it to any other one in this world. The people in this Country of ours makes it the best in the world. That's why everyone hates us and yet still would give their left one to live here and be like us.

After I posted my last comments I thought better of what I said. There are still some pretty dang good Countries out there that have been our allies in good times and bad. Just to name a few, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and plenty of others, but they still aren't the good ole USA. Can't fault me for thinking my Country is the best.
