Jon

Just a little tip from someone who knows better.

Never post a picture of you beautiful wife where these hounds will go for the throat!

Keep us posted on the backrest. I may want one. As long as your wife comes with it!!

Hey Jon, I know my Ultra Drops down to right above the top of the Driver seat, can you feel that exposed bar when you accelerate?

Hey Jon, I know my Ultra Drops down to right above the top of the Driver seat, can you feel that exposed bar when you accelerate?

I didn't get a chance to ride with it on because the bar that went into the slot was accidentally cut too short and it would not safely stay in. Lonnie had already realized this mistake and emailed me by the time I got home for work. Everything looked good and the workmanship was excellent.

As far as the bar being exposed against your back, I don't know at this time. I have the idea of wrapping the exposed portion on the bar in a leather-like matching vinyl. I think that would look good plus, if it does contact your tail bone, may soften the feel a little.

So for your wife to get on and off the bike, do you have to pull the backrest out of the bracket and slide it back in, or is the other portion hinged?

It's not hinged. You either pull the backrest off and slide it back in or lift herself over it.

I have a driver's backrest from Lonnie for my Nomad and just LOVE IT! Man, it sure saves the ol' back and makes those last 20-30 miles before stopping for a fill-up on longer rides a breeze. I also like how easy it is to hide away in the bags and how easy it goes on/off with the bracket hidden by the pillion.

Great design ergonomically and economical to boot!

Kudo's to da man Lonnie!

So, I'll ask you, can you feel the bar in your back when you accelerate? I know there have been numerous times I've really pushed back in the seat and I'd think that needs to be padded???

Furthermore, boasting about our co riders carries no weight without pictures, so here is my lovely bride who just entered her 40's, thus making here eligible for the competition and another Texas Hottie

Mike,
No, you cannot feel the bracket in your back under acceleration, and that includes all degrees of acceleration (mild to full throttle).

There are pix of the backrest on my bike here: http://s259.photobucket.com/albums/hh296/DS06Nomad/

Hope it helps...

If we start posting pics of our women, I suggest two rules: 1. They can't really be the babysitter, and 2. They have to be sitting on or standing near our Nomad to prevent some of you from posting babes from the internet.

Thanks Daryl, it's good to have alternatives. Looked like it might be an issue. Good to know it's not.

Should have been more clear, I've never found "hard" acceleration to be an issue like past bikes I've had. so it doesn't really DRIVE my meager 280 lbs too far back, but if I could feel it in my back, that would be bothersome http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Yea wolfman, with my aeromach riser and backrest the next thing is highway pegs!!! Not sure which are the best but I'm looking!!!!! I've seen just the adjustable peg to almost a small floorboad design.

02-19-2008, 11:44 PM
highway pegs are a MUST!! I have harley davidson ones (gift from my best friend who rides a harley)These pics are of dui's bike. Mine have the exact same mounting clamps except I flipped my clamps around 180 degrees. This allows you to stretch out another couple inches and also makes the pegs more even with the highway bars when they are flipped up. I mounted mine about 1/2 way up the highway bars and love it!

If I remember right they are inch and 1/4. You can by the clamps for about 10 or 20 bucks from harley and then use any peg you like. My pegs are rubber on top and chrome underneath like these http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_p....id=2534374 3090 (http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444184592 3&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=25343743090)

Actually i think Lonnie's backrest is one that removes easily (like 5 seconds) for the rider/passanger to mount up easier. What i am uncertain of, is the adjustability. I personally have the Bakup, and it adjust fore-aft and up/down. Also lays down so passanger can easily mount up. For the money, Lonnie makes the most affordable and workable backrest for the Nomad to date. I love the Backup, and wouldn't take the world for it. If Lonnie had his available when I bought mine, I would have gone with his. I am looking for repaking of my seat now as I cannot get a modified support bracket to make it work with Mustangs. That would be the ULTIMATE. Oh well.Hoping to find someone locally to do the work, as I dont want to send seat off and be without a seat for a week or two. Lonnie might be moved to look into modifing his support bracket to be useable with Mustang seats. I sure wish Bakup would.

I have installed a backrest form http://www.utpr.com/ this is a company out of Ca. called Utopia they make a fully adjustable rest up and down 3-4 inches and foward and back with a thumb screw. install requires you to disassemble your passenger seat to install. it also come with a pocket in the rest and folds down for easy pasenger mount and dismount.

I love the quality and look of this backrest. tested it tonight and some adjustments need to be made for the 1600 Nomad. I spoke to Lonnie on the phone and gave him some measurements. He is great to deal with and I feel like I'm helping develop a new product that will be very popular with Nomad riders everywhere.

I took some pics of the instillation and my wife holding the backrest (there is a backrest in the pic, Nico). I'll do a follow-up soon when the final version gets installed.

I posted this on another thread but it may have slid under the radar. There was mention on the other thread of the single bolt holding the backrest bracket becoming a little loose. Someone modified the bracket to a three point connection which sured up the seatback attachment to the frame of the bike. Since the reinforced bracket with three connections is stronger and safer, and we are all concerned with safety, is there a possibility future brackets for the Nomad 1600 will have the three point connect? How many who have the backrest see a need for the three point connect? I have heard nothing but great comments on the backrest so it may be a moot point. Just want to make sure before I get one.
