Because old farts are extremely paranoid of identity theft. There are people who believe that their social security number can be derived from their email address if their email address falls into the wrong hands.

Hell... if somebody wants your information, I'm of the mind set that they'll get it!! I've had the same email address for 15 years now and I've already been through identity theft so.... what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. I was in a very secure site, behind firewalls when it was stolen, so like I said, if they want it, they're going to get it. That being said, my info is out there!

As admin, if I could make it required to supply that info and not hide it, I would, but the system won't let me, so there are those that won't show their gender and city, etc.
