Hi all,

I'd like to take this time to say thanks to Trip for allowing me to join this group.

At this time, I'd like to give you all a short bio of myself. I bought my 06 nomad back in August after getting rid of my 98 Goldwing SE. I loved my Goldwing but back in 2003 I had a compound fracture of by right ankle. The Orthopedic Surgeon that operated on be told me it was the worse fracture he'd seen in over 32 years of practice. At the time I thought nothing of it.

With the fracture, anything that could go wrong did. I developed a bone infection in the break and it took a year for that to clear up. Months later it returned so back on the antibiotics I went. All this time, the fracture just would not heal. I tried everything but nothing worked. To make a long story short, after over two years of trying to get my ankle to heal, I opted for an amputation. At 52 years old, I wanted to get my life back. I got tired of walking on crutches and sitting around all day.

With my prosthetic leg I was unable to press down on the back brake fully. I could slow it but that's about it. So I sold it to my Boss. I bought the Nomad cause with the floor boards and that type of brake peddle, I have no problem working the rear brakes. I've always been a fan of Kawasaki, dating back to the KZ1000. I didn't want a Harley because I've ridden them and I'm not going pay premium prices for an inferior product. I had thought about the Yamaha Road Star, it's a great bike but I decided on the Nomad for a mutable of reasons. $12,000 out the door was on of them, plus I wanted water cooled. My biggest complaint with the Nomad would be the speedometer. It seems to be way off. I'll have to check it out against my GPS. The other thing is I miss having is a center-stand. How to heck did Kawasaki think one's to check the rear tire pressure without laying down on the garage floor?

I'm sure I'll have a bunch of questions in the future. I just wanted to say hi and thanks for a great board to read daily.

Welcome Dave. You asked how to check the rear tire pressure without laying on the garage floor; if you find one, be sure to clue us in cause that's the only way I know of. You're right about the speedo being off too. Most find theirs to be off 5 mph give or take 1 or 2 depending on speed. By my GPS, mine is off 5 mph at 45 to 70mph. Lower than that it runs 3 to 4 and above that it climbs to 6mph off. I just watch my GPS if I'm in an area that I know has speed traps or is strange to me or mentally subtract 5 from what the speedo says.
Again, welcome and ride safe,
Dano

Dave,

Welcome. As you have already noted, this is a great site, if you don't mind some of the topics wandering off a bit, but some just feel the need - Nomad affectionados all. You will enjoy it here.

Glad to here that you weathered some tough times well.

One alternative on airing the rear tire is a quick-release on the saddle bag, they come off real easy as-is but the quick release should be a snap (I'd haven't done it yet.)

Welcome from NW Georgia. Go to google and look up speed-o-healer. You can fix the speedometer problem for about $100.

Thanks all.

FYI I live in Garden Grove, California. I like riding the back roads of San Diego. Especially out to Mom's in Julian for some apple pie. I want to get to heck out of California and have told my boss I'll transfer anywhere away from this state and any big city. One of my job locations that require me to visit often is in Clearfield, UT. What a beautiful state. I hate having to leave there and fly home. Only problem there is too many Californians moving in.

Dave,

Welcome aboard! And you're right, lots of great people with tons knowledge of the Nomad and big Kawi cruisers here o this forum.

I have to say, that was one heck of an intro. I already admire you for the difficult decision you made and how you refuse to let a prosthesis dampen your passion for riding. And not just because you remain a rider (that's secondary)... but because you refuse to let it change your life or dampen your spirit for living. That, to me, is shear strength. Kudo's to ya...

So welcome aboard; hope your New Years was good; and I hope '08 and beyond brings you miles and miles of safe and enjoyable times, both on and off the Nad.

Best,
Daryl
