At the risk of appearing ignorant, what is the difference between that switch and the stock switch?
There's a mod I would love to see here in Texas....and that's sunshine.
I know I shouldn't biatch (especially since you California guys are in a drought)...but it's been raining here almost everyday since the first of June. Every pic I see that Nico posts has sunshine! Can you guys pipe some of that stuff over here? Isn't August supposed to be hot and dry with plenty of sunshine?
Oh...nice mod Nico.

All I want for Christmas is a Mustang seat!!
Starting from the Top:
Willy Max storage bag for the back rack, tank bib with pocket, BreakAway Cruise Control, Phat II risers, front shield bag, tool bag, front fender trim, top side bag rails, lower side bag rails, Airlite Chaps, chrome license plate holder. CWI spot light with the new changed lens. Future considerations will be a hitch, and trailer single wheeled. But I'll need to come out from retirement for that large purchase..... :) I'm not changing the power plant by adding to it or taking away. I'll be keeping the motor etc stock.
Cheers
Sounds nice chef! http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u272/DrNickDC/canadian.jpg http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Oh yeah, put more air in the tires. They tend to be a little low. The bike handles a lot better with 42/40, front rear. :)

Well so far the best thing i added was some rear lights. I mounted a set of maltese cross tail lights on the saddle bags to triple my driving and break lights. And i added some bullet lights under the tour trunk for turn signals
Mine would be my Quadzilla.

Hard to say which one is the "Best". Larger lowers, PhatRisers II and Mustang Seat with back rest. They all cured something that was bugging me and I would not get rid of any of them. So, I guess it will have to be a "Comfort Package". Lowers, risers and seat.

I am pretty sure that my significant other would disagree with me on this opinion, but I think the best upgrade we have made on ours is my backrest. I didn't fully appreciate it until the other day when we took a ride without it (had the stock seat on for some reason). My backrest is amazing, I will never ride without it ever again. And it looks great too!! ;)

Doc, the seats are stock seats that we re-did to match all of our stuff, the backrest is something that my other half came up with... We love coming up with stuff like that. Currently working on a smaller one (without the arms) that is a little cheaper... you can see them on our site. Just click on the link on the sig line. I absolutely love mine... the difference with and without it is just ridiculous...

As a newbie to this forum and to my Nomad, the best mod to my bike so far is DEFINITELY.... Me!!! Me owning it, riding it, getting on it, starting it up, backing it out of the driveway, cruising on it.... I just LOVE this bike, so the best mod to the bike is: Me!

I should mention that this is slightly different than their standard seat. I had then add foam to the front of the passenger seat for me to lean against as a backrest.
It's not the coolest looking seat...like a corbin...but as far as putting on miles...it's da bomb!
nice looking seat 'Zinger! looks comfortable 4 both of you!

The Awesome Mustang seat will be my favorite. Makes the bike look better and the butt feel better. I first bought the one with the driver's backrest but did not like it because I felt like it pushed me too forward and felt annoying to me. I sent it back and got the one without the driver backrest. On this one the passenger seat goes forward and over the driver's seat to give nice support to my lower back and about $200. cheaper. I just bought some chrome studs that match the seat and will put them on the backrest pad so all will match.

The Russel was $771 OTD. That cost included the 1 day ride-in service $80 and heavy duty springs in the seat cause of large rider and passenger $90.
Still that cost is cheaper than a Corbin.
I also checked out a mustang but I talked with several X-large (280lb) guys like me and they said that the seat is really small. I called Mustang and they said that most of the complaints they get for their 1600 Nomad seats is from larger people due to the small Front to back size.
From everyone I've talked to and every forum I've read on seats for 1600 Nomad...You can't beat a Russell for comfort and Long distance riding.
I was reading a forum Friday night and someone was offering a deal on a group buy of Russell seats for 20% off. For the life of me, I cannot find it again. The girl posted that they may even end up with a 25% discount if more people order. I'll keep looking.

...looked back a little and found this on another forum.
"Just bumping up this thread... if you are interested in a Russell Day Long seat you can get 20% off just by writing "FJR GROUP BUY" on top of your order form when you send it in by November 30th. Production dates are out into January, but if you are parking the bike for the winter anyway, who cares?
The more people getting in on this, the more likely we can get 25% off, but the 20% is locked in at this point."
.....seems like time is running short on this offer. If I recall correctly, one might have to join the FJR forum to take advantage of this offer.
Mike

I forgot about this addition / mod to my Nad, and I use it every day. I wired in a garage door opener with a push button on my left switch housing. It works great and no fumbling for the remote! The one shown is from Gadgets page. I installed a pushbutton switch.

Some add ons are just because motorcycle guys are nuts, and like a dog marking it's territory, we have to make it ours.
But of the things that really make a difference in riding, not just customizing the look, I'd have to go with the Phat II risers. IMO they make the look worse, but the ride is so much better.
I got a mustang seat, but haven't put it on yet. I was fine with the 1500 nomad seat, but the 1600 seat doesn't work for me at all.

The best mod for me right now is the tour pack that we added with the wompus rack. Talk about storage. On the longer trips that we like to take, we can pack more and have it secured for the trip.
Other things that may be done include giving a shot at reshaping the seat for me. Adding some driving lights and some chaps.

Good call, Judi. Some of the best money I spent on my last bike and I'm sure I'll give in and do the same on this one. Makes HUGE difference in comfort and lower back support.

So far the best mod for me has been the V&H Baggers. I love the way they sound and perform. However, of the mods I hope to get in the future include (in no certain order): risers, grips, Mustang seat, and CaddmannQ's dual air intake mod.
(god I hope the wife doesn't see this; she's gonna freakin' kill me!)... Again.

My favorite is the ape hangers. My bad shoulder would get tired and cramped until I got my hand position up to about shoulder level. Other than that I would say the Airlite engine guard chaps. They allow me to ride year round comfortably.

Those apes do look nice on there!!! How's the handling?
bobzinger
12-07-2007, 12:10 PM
Hey Pablo...did you add the apes yourself? I'm guessing all the wires and hoses need considerable lengthening. Are they 16" apes?
pablo
12-07-2007, 01:00 PM
Nico,
I can't tell any difference in the handling. Once you get used to the higher position, it seems awkward to have your hands lower. I guess it's all what you're used to.
Zinger,
I did the mods myself. I had a quote from American Iron Horse to do everything (parts and labor) for $550, but decided to go for it myself. The bars are 16" apes and I have 2 1/2" riser Scootworks riser extensions also. The cables and lines are +6" except for the brake line which is +4". I had to solder about a million wire extensions to the left hand controls and four extensions to the right. I probably saved about $250 doing it myself, but probably didn't do as good on the wiring as AIH would have done.
Paul
I really do like the look........ hmmm...

Someone told me that handle bar height over 15" from the top of the driver's seat is illegal in Texas. I'm not sure if that is correct, but I"m about 20" over. So far, no one has pulled me over.
bobzinger

Man I love the look of those apes. I had 12" on my Roadking and it felt great. I just put 4" dog bones on my risers and they're high enough but the bend of the handlebars doesn't work real well when they get too high.
I think in Cali it's 6" above shoulder height is illegal......

I don't know if it's true, but if it is, there would be a lot of bikers getting pulled over because I see ape's all the time.

You anti Harley guys crack me up. The biggest reason I wanted to get rid of my Harley was because of their Anti Metric attitudes. The Harley I used to ride never leaked a drop of oil...nor does any EVO or up Harley. 80% of my buddies ride Harley's and have never had a bit of mechanical problems. Modern Harleys are fine machines...JUST WAY OVERPRICED! Badmouthing a Harley doesn't make a Metric any better.
