View Full Version : Do you ride or put it away for the winter?

The first year I got my Nomad I put fuel stabilizer in it, then ended up riding it till that gas was out. Did it again over and over. Every other year I've known that once the snow melts off the road, I'm going for a ride, and stopped using fuel stabilizers.

In the past 8 years, living in Denver and Salt Lake, I don't think I've gone more than 2-3 weeks without a ride. I probably don't ride much below about 15 degrees. It's not a set thing, it just doesn't talk to me much when it's that cold.

What about yourself?

Here in the Dallas we don't get much, if any, snow, but we do get ice and that's where I draw the line.

You and Me Doc... I'm outside of Houston...so if it's not slicker than owl S*%T... I'm ridding! Hell.. my other choice is a Ford 250 Diesel...and since the oil companies seem fit to charge more for diesel than premium gas, and I ride about 70miles a day round trip, it's a LOT cheaper (not to mention heaps more fun) to ride the NAD!!

Picked my Nomad upon the 27th Nov it rained for 6 days solid :'( but as soon as the roads dried out i was out cruising http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif . Only had 3 short trips up to now due to the fact the temp has dropped to around 0 degree C, but still enjoyed the ride http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif roll on the spring.

Isn't that why you have the blade on your truck......to get your Nomad out?

Cold? you mean like under 70?

http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif Yeah dank, that would work. I could plow and get it to the road. Unfortunatly, the road is covered with hard pack snow and ice. Not to mention the salt that eats up our cars and trucks up here. :)
But then again this is where I have lived for the past 62 years. You would think I would be used to it by now http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

You missed one. I ride if there's no chance of Black Ice or a snow storm bad enough to make the roads slick. Don't matter how cold it is, only the condition of the road.
Ride safe,
Dano

If I didn't hide it four or five months I would be putting 15,000 miles on it every year. I put 9 to 10k on it in eight months anyway and never get much more than 100 miles from home.

I usually wind up not riding for about 8 weeks this time of year, but as soon as the temps are up I'm right back out there. First part of December I wash and clean it, make sure both tanks are full and add some seafoam just in case it does sit for 3 months, but it seldom does.
Hey this is Colorado! We can be 10 below zero and then hit the low 70s three days later.

No reason to hide it. Just keep it gassed up and ride it when you can.

I ride as long as it is above 30 degrees F and there is no salty wetness on the road.

I believe McAllen Tx (Home for me) had the nations high temp yeasterday and today it got to 85 deg. Thank God I can ride year round. My problem is in the summer when it's 110 in the shade UGH! I rode a toy run on Sunday and the temp was 40. I almost froze to death - my gloves are worthless. It was a blast anyway. I feel for all of you guys who had to but your baby away!

Dan,
If you voted "I ride year-round", I don't have to tell you to BE CAREFUL going over the overpasses. I learned that REAL quickly when I first moved to Denver. I was in cage, so not quite as scarey as on a m/c, but I'll certainly never forget coming over the overpass by Coor's Field at "maybe" 10mph, applying the brakes and sliding helplessly for what seemed an eternity, just praying I wouldn't hit someone else. I lived in Englewood for 2 years, BTW, by Camden and University.

Anyway, I ride in the cold if it's safe given my cold gear at present. I don't have any heated gear (yet), and even my best gloves still allow my hands to freeze. My textile pants and jacket are great on safety features, but are not exactly wind resistant! http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gifare My cut-off temperature is ~35 degrees. Any colder and I puss-out and take the truck.

I try to ride all year round - but that's why I have a KLR also!!! It's fairly clear here and temps around +2C - very little snow on ground - most roads clear - back alleys are slippery - will be out this weekend! Go to work @ 6 in the A.M. so it's not condusive to ride in dark with Ice & Snow lurking in the shadows. Day time is another thing!!!!

Mines in the garage for its yearly detailing. I will ride until the first snow or ice, then it garaged until the first rain after the last snow. Its hard enough to keep clean yet alone let the salt and stuff and causeing rust. Hopefully will get it out end of March or begining of April

I ride when I can. Right now there's about 12" of snow, and alot of icey spots on the road, so not right now. Expecting big rain and 40s on Sunday, so maybe next week I can get out.
