When me and the wife are out for a ride (she has her own bike), we would like to communicate with each other and I like to listen to music. So what would be a good communication system (besides hand signals), do you use bike to bike that doesn't cost a weeks pay.

I really dont have a suggestion, riding the bike is when I get out of communicating

We say what we have to say at stop signs / red lights, or when we stop for gas/food.
When I ride it's no time to get distracted by the reading of the "HONEY DO LIST"!

I ride to be free like a bird,
or maybe that was suppose to be
ride to be free of birds,
or maybe watch out for that bird!

I have been using a chatterbox FRSX2 and have been thrilled with it for several years. Good battery life, does bike-to-bike, intercom, Audio (mp3/radio, etc), and phone (I dont use a phone while riding).

The voice activated capability works great for me, but they also have two PTT buttons (one on the transmitter, and one on a plug-in cable) if you want to use it. I never have. Good distance for group riding. Lots of channels so you dont have to worry about channel traffic even in large groups.

I have also found their customer support to be extremely good whenever I have a question, or lost a small part (they sent one to me free of charge with just an email).

If you go this route, get the open face mic as it is a boom mike and allows you to put the mic next to your mouth.

As a bonus, when I am riding by myself, I have a cable that hooks the in-helmet speakers directly to my ipod, allowing me to keep the unit off the helmet for when I need it.

Street price is around $250 per unit (you would need two - one for each bike).

Oh - I forgot the most important feature....It has an easy on/off switch when the yada yada yada gets to much and you just need to hear the wind or pipes!!!

Cindy has her own bike and it is GREAT to be able to talk to each other while riding.
We have the Scala Rider Q2. It is reliable and quality made. You can also listen to music, which I don't. It has blue tooth capability.
Google it and read up on it. I think it is just what you are looking for.
The bike to bike range is 1640 feet.

Jackson,

This was a really good review on the Scala system, a little while back:

Not sure if it's what you need...
