View Full Version : Nomads and Trailers
Is there any chance that we could get a sub forum set up to cover trailering with a Nomad? I pull a Leesurelite camper with my 03 1500 Nomad. This past season was the maiden voyage for this setup. Toured over 18,000 miles in four and a half months with the camper in tow. During my travels I saw two other Nomads with the same rig as mine and met a guy with a 1600 and Bunkhouse setup at the Sturgis Rally.
So I was thinking if there are enough of us Nomaders here there might be an interest for a sub forum to discuss problems and good times specifically related to the Nomad.
Come Spring I'm off again for five months or so ... No major plans as to where ... the wind will let me know as I go. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Emu, I have a Bunkhouse trailer and will be making a HF home made. I know there are others on here that have trailers.
Trip? Could this be a sub board on the mechanical side of things?

Yes ... Some one has to do it ... http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
Coacha, I know the Bunkhouse dry weight is more than the Leesurelite ... what is the total weight when loaded down with all your gear and how does your Nomad handle when towing?
I noticed I had to rethink my riding a little when towing.

I like to see that also, I have been hesitant to get a trailer after the discussions about the clutch springs and such. A trailer forum would help a lot of people thinking about doing it I think.

I agree with getting a sub board. I'm just about finished with my HF trailer and would like to hear about pitfalls people find with pulling the trailer, where they take them, lessons learned and maybe more info on customizing the trailers.
I vote YES.

Those are some wonderful pictures and it look like you had some wonderful times. Were did you get your trailer and any problems with the bike clutch.
Yea ... I glazed the clutch during a two hour border crossing into British Columbia from Seattle. The first hour was a slight upgrade in stop and go traffic. Not good. Rode to Saskatchewan to put thick Kawi steel plates in and she's been fine ever since. Unrelated ... the stators went further south than I did ... but when stators go ... They go. Other than that ... Wore out a rear tire and a pair of brake pads.
I got the trailer here in Ontario.

Can someone please tell me more about the clutch plate issue. Aug of 09 we are riding from Tampa area to Montreal CN. I'm taking the trailer and she's riding her bike.
I already planned on bringing extra brake pads but it sounds like I should put in heavier clutch plates before I go.
Is there anything else I should know before I take a long trip like that with the trailer?

My clutch problem came about after extreme circumstances. With the stock clutch I pulled the trailer from Toronto via Michigan and in a not too direct route south, rode the mountains to Suches Georgia, then meandered out to the west coast. It was that hour in stop and go traffic on a slight up hill grade while crossing the border that the clutch got cooked.

This is the first story I've heard of someone glazing their clutch while towing a trailer with any bike. I'm sure this is not a typical experience.

It is a good little trailer. but, it is also a little heavy when fully loaded. I didn't like the way that my 1500 Nomad pulled it out here in the northern Rockies. I just felt that the weight was just a little too much. I think that the LeasurLite would have been a better match. But, I do like the room available in the Bunkhouse, especially with the den attached.

Yeh, but a Trailer Park would be so nice.
Nomad ... conjures up visions of the meandering traveler. Trailer Park ... that word "park" seems to go against what a Nomad does naturally. Put them together ... Nomad Trailer Park ... and you have an oxymoron ... a conundrum ... Winston Churchill once said of the Nomad and trailer parks ... "It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma" ... So you see we could just plunge ourselves into a philosophical discussion that could take years and maybe 2 to 3 pages to finally reach a modicum of relevance if not a general consensus that another page is needed to lose total interest. Therefore, I suggest in the name of continuing our lives uninterrupted ... We just say Nomad Trailer Temporary Layover Discussion Area ... (snicker)

I have an 08 Nomad and I have an Aluma trailer that we pulled to and from the Black Hills last summer. We will be using it on any trips longer than 3 days (which will include the Custer Rally). You really can't tell it's there but have to be careful pulling up to service stations as you aren't used to something behind you and have to take a little wider turns. We are going to use it to haul camping "stuff" this summer and really like it so far.
I would like a sub-forum also so we can keep tabs on trailer and what kind of trailers are out there and how they pull. I'm particularly interested in the pop-up type of trailer also.
