I'm sure this been ask before but would like to know what some of you are using for GPS units, Trip I know you have the Garmin 2610, but would like to know if anyone has some different toys.wife said I can have one (and yes she is the boss she has all the good stuff) ride safe.

I would say the best one going is the Garmin Zumo 550 which is motorcycle specific.
I use a Rand McNally road atlas. (Hey, you asked if we had any different toys.) I like that I see an entire state and often find destinations and routes I would have otherwise missed. I just memorize the roads and go. I know I'm behind the times in this, but I like maps. Cheaper than GPS too.
Actually David, I just bought and installed a Zumo 550. On this last trip I took to Utah, apparently the vibration from some of the washboard roads in New Mexico did some damage to my 2610.
So, I bit the bullet and bought a Zumo. The Zumo is made for a motorcycle...takes vibration, is waterproof. I love it. Still learning about it too.

I agree with dank-maps here.

+1 for the Zumo 550. Had mine for over a year so far and love it. Maps are good, but the ability to change routes on the fly or just to run an overview of the roads ahead while you're moving make the Zumo way more valuable to me.

So can anyone give a comparison between the Zumo and the TomTom? All I know about either one is what I read on the internet. Outside of the enclosed case and possibly stouter electronics for vibration, does anyone use a regular car GPS? The one I use is a hand held one and it is very limited with what I can do.

As good as a gps is i still do good with a map. Besides a wrong turn can lead to some interesting finds

I have been using a Garmin Nuvi 660 for about a year now. No problems with it and I like the way it works. I had 3 different makes and models before I got the Nuvi. Whichever GPS you get, in my opinion, the ability to "auto reroute" if you don't stick to the planned route is a must have feature.

Thank you very much the zumo 550 was the one I was looking at, the main reason that I want the GPS is too track my routes and way points I may want to note. I have always done the map as dank said I like looking at my entire route. wander, I like your point of 'auto reroute' does this come on the 550?

All GPS's recalculate your route if you don't follow it's directions. I've got the Garmin C330 in the workvan and bought 4 for Christmas presents, I had the girl recalculate so many times it's a wonder she doesn't get fed up and start yelling at me http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

I saved a few bucks by buying the Zumo 450. It does not have the blue tooth capabilities like the 550, but that is not an issue for me.

I do both. Use the gps, and have a map to look at.

They don't all "auto" reroute. Some require a number of button pushes to get them to reroute.

Time for a new improved model. All the one's I've been seeing do it and they were dirt cheap Black Friday. I was in line 4:15 AM like a damn fool but it panned out. I'll see 4 happy kids on Christmas Eve.

We have a TomTom 920. We absolutely love it! We rigged up a set of earphones, so we can answer a cell phone, and listen to music while driving, due to the bluetooth capabilities. It was a little pricey, but if you are like us, (who tend to get lost and end up in scary parts of town) then it is worth it. It has paid for itself several times...
