I intend to add a venture trunk to my nomad within the next few months and I've been following the trunk threads with interest as well as using the search function. I have a question I hope you can help with.

Is there a significant difference in the capacities of the 83-85 venture trunks vs. the 86-93? Does anyone know the respective dimensions or capacities?

Thanks for your help!!

I can't tell you the dimensions, but the 86-93 models are a little larger. The largest trunk out there is the Harley tour pack. It's quiet a bit larger than all the different model Ventures, and the Goldwing 1800.

TWO full face. No kidding? That is great. I have been bidding on one on ebay and I was getting just for the wife's comfort but it is great to know that it is that large.

Hi goldstar you might want to check with Dan Lund. He has or had both sizes in the Venture trunk, if I'm not mistaken. I have the '84 Venture trunk and find it has a lot of room.

....Looks like I may be a bit late offering this, but if anyone is interested, I have an early 80's (small) and early 90's (large) Venture trunks that I could put side by side and take a picture of to give an idea of their size. Let me know if you wanna see that! :)

$129 with backrest & chrome rack. Supposed to have minor cracks in the bottom of the trunk. We'll see.

Lomax If you could, go ahead and post the picture. I think I'll be pleased with the '84 but you never can tell, I might change my mind. Besides, there may be others who would like the same information. Thanks for the offer.

...sure thing. I will post a picture or two tomorrow. There are a couple of the larger Venture trunks in sig pics on the forum. If you can find a post of "oldbikers" or "audiogooroo", you will have an idea what the larger ones look like on the nomad. :)

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to post a link. Mine was EBAY item # 370122207394 with a closing date of Nov 30th. It can be viewed in the completed listings. I think that I saw yours, purchased a few days earlier with a brown leather backrest?

I just got one for a 83 off ebay for $19. I happened upon it yesterday and there were only a few hours left and no bids. It doesn't have the backrest pad so I am bidding separately on that. If not I will have to keep searching or have a local shop try to make one.

It stated that it had some cracks in the bottom but they were repaired. I am not concerned as I will probably reinforce the bottom with a thin sheet of metal on the inside and outside when I mount it.

Thanks Lomax, The old saying is true, a picture is worth a thousand words. From the looks of the trunks it would seem that the larger one has about 50% more capacity. Is that about right in your opinion?

lomax

....well, its definately bigger, don't think it is quite 50% bigger, but it will hold, uhhh, maybe a dozen more beer cans???? http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Now you're speaking in terms I understand. The beer can is a universal standard of measure.

Wasn't it like 40 or so that would fit into a saddlebag. I remember someone posting a pic of a saddlebag stacked with cans. Beezer maybe. I can't remember now but I want to say it was like 42 just shy of two cases.

You may have already thought of it, but I'd get a sheet of rubber gasket material and shim a lot of the low areas of the inside and underside to distribute the load over a large area.

Knowing other Venture trunks were cracked on the bottom from reading ebay, I did the rubber shim stacks on mine and then tightened the mounting bolts and had no problem with cracks.

That is a good idea Dan. I was thinking two thin sheets of metal. One on the bottom inside and one outside and have the bolts run all the way through both but the rubber between the inner sheet and the bottom fiberglass would be added protection.

I never thought about shimming it thats a good idea

If you go to an Ace hardware, in the plumbing section you can get a sheet of rust colored rubber about the size of a sheet of paper.

It cuts easy. Just score it with a razor knife and you can easily tear it.
