Attn SERN's...

Just thinking out loud here, but it seems we have folks coming from Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Tenn., The Carolinas, etc.

Looking at the map, maybe Nashville TN might be a good location to meet up before heading to SD. I can envision everyone arriving from their home base, checking into a meeting hotel, and then hitting the road as a group the next morning.

I'll defer to our regional leaders, but I'll like to suggest a group meet up to head out together.

Comments???

That is kinda the plan as it is formulating. Small packs of SERN's migrating toward the west to meet up and take on all comers from some point west to Custer.

I vote Joe as the official map planning guy.

+1, Joe thats good thinking there. you folks come here and then we can leave out early and pick up folks in nashville and head north if we could plan it just right we could have a lot of nomads by the second day into the ride. and the third day we would roll into custer. it's 1,467miles from my door to custer.

Dave, where exactly are you? I figure Coach and I are the furthest away, and if I start with Coach near Crystal River, that's 638 miles to Nashville. Don't know if we can push more than that. May have to back it down to Chattanooga which is 506 for us. Depends on Coach since he'll be riding 2 up. Also looks like we'll both be pulling a trailer.

I know we have a lot of time, but the planning helps with the anticipation. :)

Dave is just 20 miles north of Chattanooga. We can stay in Cleveland, then head toward Nashville the next day. It is 523 miles give or take to Dave's place. It's about 10 hours via I-75 speedway. Not a bad ride actually.

davidjones1
11-14-2008, 11:24 PM
Joe as Ron said I am just above chatt town its about 1.5-2 hours away from nashville its a good ride to there the roads are in very good shape until you get into nashville, picking a meet up spot there will be the tough one I would want to meet on the north side after that the ride smooths out from the traffic. I agree with planning it does drive the anticipation.
ride safe.

Dave,
Looking at the map from where folks are coming from, where we are headed, and your knowledge of the area..any suggestions?

davidjones1

Joe,
I can get us up into Kentucky with out a problem, and then hand it over too some in that area to take us on through and then so on would be the way I would want it too go. this way we can get the best of each state and everyone gets in on the planning. one of you more computer knowledgeable folks should start a sign up page for anyone wanting to lead through their state or area of.

Dave,
Pick a "first meet up spot" and then we'll solicit others to guide us for the balance of the trip.

davidjones1
11-16-2008, 05:40 PM
Sound's like the start of a plan I'll work on it once I look at where all the folks coming up and over or from, then I'll pick what I think is the best for the first meet up spot. and as you said we can go from there. there are some coming up for ponits south of me that you can meet up with in GA and AL and may be more out of FL. so a need for a who's coming section wll have to happen.
ride safe.

Sounds like good idea. I figured we'd probably hook up somewhere Kentucky/Ohio.........since coming from northwest corner of TN, no need to backtrack to Nashville.

after looking at the map and doing some map quest searching I think one of the best areas for the multi state hook up to happen will be saint Louis as this seems to be a big turn toward the north for most of us. there will be many that can be gotten along the route but they will need to let us know when and where. but for a main group spot this would be my pick as this will be a good day of hard riding for anyone leaving the tn/NC/GA/ala/miss/ark/ms-areas. the fl folks I know that you have to start the trip one day a head of the states listed above Ron/Tammy-Joe plan on meeting in Tn with Andrea and I, anyone from the GA area- west NC/SC areas I hope can make this meet in Chattanooga for and early morning departure. of course this is just for planning any or all of this plan can change but it gives us something to think about.

Dave...
Looks doable for us. I'll ride up to Crystal River the night before and hook up with Mr. and Mrs. Coach for the ride to Chattanooga. It'll be a haul at about 507 miles from Crystal River, but I look at it as 5 gas ups for Coach..

Tested out the new trailer this weekend. Put about 750 miles in 2 days and she pulled just fine. Not much of a sacrifice in the MPG's, until I went over 70 on the interstate. Now I've got room for lots of "stuff." .....Joe

coacha
11-29-2008, 11:02 PM
Glad you made it back ok Joe. It is about 4 tanks on my bike Joe...that is without a trailer. It is 520 miles to Cleveland.

I will say this, I won't be driving a Heritage Softtail that is for sure.

Todd
11-30-2008, 10:09 AM
I hope we can hook up with you guys....I had to ride over to Greenville TN this week to pick up a car and rode 321 from the Boone to the Greenville area......The whole time I was telling my wife what a great motorcycle ride it would be. I think it would be a great start to the trip. Will add about 30 to 45 minutes to the whole trip but would not be superslab for the first part anyway. I may consider that if others from this area want to. That might make it doable to meet somewhere in the St. Louis area.

I will probably end up doing what ever the most coming from the area will want to do. I think the journey there and back will be a huge part of the fun and getting to know folks even better than our regional rally.

St. Louis looks doable. I can ride over to Greensboro Thursday, spend the night and meet up with Todd and we can head out on Friday morning towards St. Louie!

I get to listen to all the 'reasons' folks call off for work....one of my favorite was........'my car doors are locked frozen'......yeah okay....like that's going to keep you from showing up for a 12 hour shift. ::)

coacha
12-03-2008, 07:22 AM
If MY truck doors froze shut down here in FL, nobody would be working because the heating systems aren't designed to handle that kind of cold in the schools. We actually did have a day off for cold back in the 80's because the HVAC couldn't handle the cold. The room temps only got into the 50's.

Thought 'd give this a bump and ask Coach a queston....

What day do you plan on pulling out of Crstal River? You know I like to plan, and I''ll probably get a hotel the night before to put about 325 miles behind me....

You really know how to get to me.... Looking forward to it, I'll scout out a hotel for Thursday night in Lake City for a Friday morning meet up.

Sounds like Dave is going to put us all up for the night? A hotel is no problem (near McD's of course ;) )

coacha
02-25-2009, 07:06 PM
I will scout out the nearest McD/hotel combo I can. Maybe I'll get a GPS and program in all the McD's from here to Custer. That way we will never be too far from one, lol.

you are more then welcome here, I will kick the kids out too friends for the night and it can be and early morning take off, if you feel Friday take off from here is what you want this will be fine with me, scents they are taking away bike week I am sure a Friday will be OK with them this far in advance. or come in a day early and rest before a long ride we could have a nice bomb fire and still leave early Saturday.

David...

There's been some chatter in the National Rally thread under "I'm coming from the east." If the Florida group is going to meet up at your place, then we need to do some planning on the trip from there. How many miles to ride each day, hotels, etc. Then there's the ride home to think about.

Appreciate your thoughts and always willing to help.

Regards..Joe

Hi, I hope this is the right spot that CoachA referred me to??? This is sort of for Coach A and Jim (Mister Funny?) but also for everyone that might join along the way. My Name is T. Ross Chess, I'm a newbie (#01045), I live in Jacksonville, FL. My cell is 252-315-4286 & email is Trosco@aol.com and I am setting up coming to the National Rally. I will be traveling alone and I'd like to join the group that is starting in Florida, running up to TN to pick up others and so on. I read all 3 pages of this and I sort of understand what is planned. I used to live in IA so am familiar with much of route. I'm retired. I can leave anytime, take as long going and coming as is needed and have a couple Iron butt patches so can also do the long days if it's needed. I have a daughter in eastern IA that I may visit on way home and may go to the June 26, 27, 28 SCRC Ridge-Runner rally in Johnson TN on the way back also. Anyones welcome to join that plan if you'd like. Sounds like the FL meet up location is Lake City with the plan to leave for TN from there Thursday morning? The I-10/I-75 interchange is a hour from me so I could get there as early in the morn on Thursday as needed and meet up with you two there? Next meet up looks like north side of Chattanooga TN. Counting the 70 miles I'll do to get to interchange that would make it a 500 mile all interstate day which is no problem. After that my plan would be to follow along, behave politely, drive carefully and get to know folks. So that's what I have figured out so far.
Jim, I am a "planner" also so I would love to have all the details and I also have gotten burned taking the approach of "I'll just catch a motel somewhere when I get tired" so I like the idea of a specific goal each day tied to where we stay that night!
CoachA, I leave late next week to ride the Gulf coast to New Orleans, then Natchez Trace Pkwy to Memphis and a visit to Nashville. It might be possible for me to run down to St Aug to meet you and friends on that Wednesday but I won't know till after this weekend? Enough for now? Thanks all

trosco...

Nice to meet you. My name is Joe (mrfuni ..long Italian name) and welcome aboard. Looks like we'll be leaving Lake City Friday morning with the first stop in Cleveland TN (407 miles) to meet up with Dave. From there, we'll probably split the riding up with 3 500 mile days to Custer.

I am also a planner and would like to have a nice clean bed and a hot shower waiting for me at each stop. Nothing special, just clean and comfortable.

I'm waiting for Dave to jump in to coordinate the planning. Stay tuned and watch the thread for more information.

You are welcome to join us for the Helen GA ride in a couple of weeks.... Joe

Blowndodge what are you doing here? Aren't you on the left coast ???

Todd...Coach can't leave until Friday so with 1500 miles in 3 days, we'll probably have to interstate it to Custer. The ride back may take a different route, we haven't gotten that far yet :)

Todd
04-08-2009, 07:54 PM
Yeah, what the hell is BD doing here ??? ???

I have a route that is about 1/2 interstate and half normal highway roads...guess we will play it by ear.

coacha
04-08-2009, 08:00 PM
If you all need to leave earlier, I can see what I can do but it would mean my wife would miss out on a paid inservice deal and I'd have to take a sick day, which isn't a big deal. Let me know what you all want to do. We could leave around 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, but that would just get us up into GA before get gets too dark.

mrfuni
04-08-2009, 09:36 PM
Coach...

We can do it with an early Friday morning take off. I've been working on the maps and it looks good if we spend Friday night in Cleveland (that's TN not OH). I've got the trip broken up between state roads and interstate, averaging about 500 miles a day for 3 days. Like the Elkins WV trip, it'll mean a 6:30 am start and a dinner time destination each travel day. When I finalize the maps, I'll get them up to you for your consideration. I also have hotels along the way, and once the route is decided we can start making reservations.

I would also like to plan a northern and southern route for the return trip. We can check the extended forecast from Custer to decide which way we want to go. No sense riding in rain (or through tornados) if we can avoid it, without adding extra miles to the trip.

If anyone has an opinion or has been working on the maps, I'm open to suggestions. For those who are going to Helen, we can kick around ideas over a cold one. :)

coacha
04-08-2009, 09:47 PM
Sounds good. Maybe we can take in some different states on the way back to add to our maps?

I have your bottle of Helen wine waiting to be picked up on the 22nd. Picked it out just for you my friend.

Hi to all, looking forward to seeing all here at my place in June, Joe you are right we will have to do at least the five hundred miles per day to make it in three days it shows to be 1467miles for my place to Custer, I hate to say that I have not had a lot of time to look over routes but will soon, I would like to make sure that all have the best ride and sees as much of the country side as possible, making this a memory not just a sore a$$, so I would like to plan a couple of side trips in the right direction just to break up the super slab white line fever so all whom plan to join us please put in your 2cents and what you would like to get out of the ride there and back, http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Hey all, Just a FYI. As a newbie and late comer I just made my Custer lodging arrangements. Bavarian said only rooms left at $100 a night and up. Pretty foolish for one old guy by himself, but they refered me to Rocket Motel as nice, clean, close by option. Rocketmotel.com is their web site. Anyway looked good, talked to owner, got room with Queen bed, refer & micro, 4 nights (Mon-Thur) $48 a night including tax. So when I get there I will either be smart or stupid depending on how it turns out,,, but they seemed nice over the phone.

I will not be able to attend the National Rally. :(
Laid the bike down over the weekend and I've lost my riding mojo. My wife is terrified for me to even get on the road again. We'll have to see how that plays out. Major moral dilemma going on now. I need to heal and get the bike repaired before any other major decisions are made..... ???

Well, since Joe is now on the IR, looks like maybe trosco and I may be the only ones heading up from FL for the rally. Earliest I will probably be able to leave is Thursday (if Tammy doesn't go) or Friday morning (if Tammy goes).

David, if you see this chime in. Todd, do you know which route you are taking out?

Todd,
Might be a good idea to check the long range weather forecast before you leave and then decide what route to take. No sense in riding into a tornado if you can avoid it ;) (Unless Coach wants to use it as a photo op :) )

Joe, I was just browsing the other regions and saw this. You are talking and typing so that is most important. When I laid mine down last year I was 500 miles from home so I all day to get my Mojo back since after a little bending she was still rideable. We will miss you in Custer but there'll be another time. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

Hi All.
Joe, bummer! I have hit cars twice in my 46 years of riding. Fell off a lot when I was doing the dirt thing too. Worst was broken collar bone. don't do that if you can help it! Sometimes it was a non issue to get back on and other times it took a while! I am a better, safer rider for those experiences though! I hope this doesn't take riding away from you permanently! Was looking forward to meeting you.
CoachA, I am still on for Custer and I can come and go as I please so schedule is up to you. A wild thought to consider. I own a home in Charlotte NC. Nice pool to hit after a days ride? Sort of out of the way but if we wanted to rendezvous with some of the NC/SC folks and gather DavidJones after that at some point on Todd's route the house is there! I am open to any route there and think it should be driven by weather report and amount of time we have! But on way home I would like to take a northern route I80 or I90 or I94 east at first. Want to stop and see Daughter in eastern Iowa. She's just a couple miles off I380 about half way between I 90/94 and I80. Be a possible stop along the way?
I'll be around for about 2 weeks then in MI and IA until Tuesday after Memorial Day. So maybe we firm up details at end of month or if you want to talk before that cell is 252-315-4286

I can't leave till either late Thursday afternoon or early Friday morning. If we want to get somewhat of a start to the ride on Thursday, I could meet you up in Lake City or Valdosta. Joe, we talked about it a little, she kinda wants to ride out.

Todd, that sounds like it will work. If we go to Macon on Thursday night, we would have about 200 miles to Cleveland, then 160 or so to Nashville on Friday (360 total). That would catch us up to you if David can leave around mid-day on Friday.

If she changes her mind there is a 9:09 am flight from Tampa leaving on Monday that arrives in Rapid City at 1:26 pm. Probably take that one since only 1 stop and a good price. Too expensive from Ft.Myers and multiple stops.

CoachA/Todd: I can go anytime. So CoachA; I am good with the plan for a meet up around I-10 / I-75 interchange in north FL on Thursday? You tell me time you can make it and I'll be there. Let's figure on a over night Thursday in southern GA with location based on your & Tammy's schedule. Then Friday in late afternoon/early evening we can go thru Cleveland to pick David up and on to Nashville for over night Friday. And there a meet up up with Todd and his gang sounds good to me!
Unless we could all leave tomorrow and spend a few extra days exploring the Rockies-central Canada-perhaps a side trip to Alaska-then down to Baja ,,, oh wait,,, daydreaming again,,,, time to check my meds.

I didn't see Todd's map. Did he post a map of the route planning on taking? I was waiting to see so could figure a place for me and Ken to catch up with the Florida/North Carolina bunch. Also think there was some from Mississippi and Arkansas that was thinking meeting up with us West Tennesseans before we hook up with you other south easterners. Does this make sense?

Edited to Add: Okay I found his google map by going back a few pages on this thread. Looks like somewheres around St. Louis/Jefferson City would be a good place to hook up for us.

Hi all, the statements that follow are a bit risky given the tone that this group's conversation has taken but,,,,,,,,,,, no risk-no reward I always say. Well actually that's the first time I have said it in a while. Money is tight and where we can cut corners (on the bikes and in our pocket books) we should. I am a 60 year old married male, non smoker with decent personal hygene. I would be willing to share a room with another person (of simular persuasion) on the trip to/from Custer if that would help lighten the burden for someone? I already have a single occupancy room in Custer for the four days so I can't help there but there's 3-4 days each way and it could cut the cost in half for those days. Let me know???

I thought Tifton is probably your limit if you and Tammy have to work that day before leaving. Do you think something around there would be feasible or is that going to be too much after working? I was searching hotels and here's one off I-75 by Tifton. Unless you qualify for a special gov't rate usually AARP is about as good as any. We can use my AARP membership for both rooms aslong as we are traveling together.

That sounds like a plan. I will be "working", no kids but still in the building. Tammy has an inservice she has to go to that day.

That's a great idea. I don't know how many of us have AARP cards but I have one. We can use them on the way to Custer to help each other with the room rate. Cool.

Coach A,
Usually as long as someone in the group has a card (AARP, AAA, etc.), they can get more than one room at the discounted price. I did that with my AAA card on the Helen run. Don't rush to join AARP, your time will come soon enough ;)

LOL...I ain't rushing the clock other than to get to Custer. I have a friend, whose mother just turned 94, and she just paid for a 5 year membership to AARP. She also made an appointment with her eye surgeon for a possible new procedure he was telling her about in 2 years. Now that is optimistic living.

Hey all, I will be "unconnected"from tomorrow until after Memorial day. Taking a FL to MI to IA and home trip with no computer tag alongs. So this questions doens't have to be answered tomorrow but I am hoping it's answered by the time I get back so I can make my room reservations.
If I get it right the FL/GA/lower TN contingent (CoachA, Davidjones, me) will meet with the VA/NC/SC/TN contingent in Nashville Friday evening. Where is everyone staying Friday evening in Nashville? Then there will be three nights after that till we get to Custer. I believe we will be following the route done by Todd from NC, where are our over nights planned or are we going to play each night as a spontaneous choice?

We are going to try to meet up with the NC group in Nashville. One thing you need to know about Todd, spontaneity is not part of his persona. I'm sure he will have a stop point in mind the closer we get to the actual leave date. Between Todd and Joe (though he isn't going to ride with us), they are the master ride planners...that is the PC way of saying it. Personally, I am good with general direction and then doing what we need when we get there...spontaneous to a degree.

Keith, I am impressed with the map stuff. I'm a visual guy though, I drive a lot by landmarks and such. If you can put some "turn left at the big chicken" or "you go by the Hess station then take a right" it would be perfect.

Can't imagine how many big chickens or Hess stations you'll pass on the road to Custer...

Can't wait to hear the road stories ;)

Yeah, I hear you Joe. I guess I have to change the wiring on this trip. Maybe a big cow or pig or ear of corn.
