What's the best time to see the fall color change in the smoky mountains? I heard it's real dry this year and it may happen quick.

Zoom45,
I have been down in the area of the NC's Smokeys in years past and the end of Oct. to the 1st week of Nov. was just absolutly gorgeous. Here in Michigan the colors are about 75%

I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking about riding up to northern GA or SC end of the month.

I'm thinking of heading to Shenandoah Valley area in a couple of weeks. Any takers? Thoughts are to stay in Waynesboro, Va and cruise around the area. Skyline Drive maybe.

From living 20 years on the Townsend, TN side of the Smokies, I can say a lot depends on the weather. However, as someone else said it is usually the last week of October, sometimes a week earlier, sometimes a week later. I actually have some photos of peak colors on the Foothills Parkway with snow on the ground and in the trees (peak colors with white added in).
I'd say the drought will likely cause a lot of leaves to fall before they change, that's what is happening here in Middle TN.

I dont know if we will get much color this year, the leaves are fallen fast as they turn. Been falling pretty good for the last week. It hasen't frosted as of yet. If it ever rains, it will probably nock them off all at once.
I live not far from Deal's Gap. We had a couple of frosty mornings last week, the leaves are starting to turn quick now. The next couple of weeks will probably be the peak color weeks.

If you PM or post something on the Southern board about when and where you are going, we have an open date the weekend of Halloween. I may just have to take Friday off.

As many have said it will probably be early, already starting. That being said another variable will be at what elevation you will be at as there are so many variations depending on where you're going.

I have the Monday before Halloween off. I was planning to go the weekend before. I'm gonna go if I have to go by myself. I am in such a need of a good ride in the mountains!!
I was just up in Mt Airy this past weekend. Took two morning rides on the blue ridge parkway between Fancy Gap and rt 89. It was beautiful! The trees were about 3/4 changed but still had almost all of their leaves.

If my brother doesn't come down for our game next Friday, I may take off on Saturday for a long ride to see some leaves.
