Practitioner put me on glucophage (metformin) 1st of September. My father died from complications related too diabetes and have a brother on glucophage.......so I'm really going to do everything I can to keep from advancing in the future to insulin etc. There's a great forum on diabetes.org I found. Lots of good advice and encouragement.

Just wonder if any other Nomaders here Type I or Type II.

Well I have empathy for you as my nephew and neice have diabetes. being a medical trained guy(vet) I know the disease well. Do everything you can to regulate it NOW! it is controllable but most people don't want to toe the line. Good Luck Unwind, and God Bless.

Im not diabetic but my grandparents were. I know that their doctor was on them for diet and drinking, but they didn't listen. They paid in the end.
My feeble advice; DO WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS. If they say change diet or other things then just do it. Your family and true friends will support it.
Good luck.

Got a older friend with diabetes, that rides alot. He recently got a pump and now has no trouble at all. We rode to Sturgis last summer from Mississippi, 5800 miles, and he never had any trouble. Just had to punch in his carbs before he ate and the pump did all the work. Good luck!!

Went to a Diabetes support group meeting and got the low down on carb counting. Next week signing up for a membership at a gym. This is like a wake up call to make me more health conscious. I am taking a proactive positive approach.

Thanks doc, flash and all.... my goal will be to able to be a good example of encouragement to someone else in the future who meets with this diagnosis.

unwind2 I was a type II diabetic 2 years ago. I weighed 320 lbs at 5'10". I lost 130 lbs by dieting & exercising in one year and was able to come off the diabetic and hypertenson meds and feel great.

What did you do to lose the weight? I know you dieted and exercised, but how did you change your diet and what type of exercise did you do?

towering - Have a friend who rode for years with an inplanted defibrillator. few years ago he triked his wing and doesn't ride much now...difib has gone off some and his wife won't ride on the bike with him anymore...pushing him to sell it.

doc - It really can give you a workout sometimes.....at least for me if I park somewheres with a slight slope to the left I have to heave ho several times to get it off it's kickstand.....and of course there a those few times when I did not realize when pulling in a parking space until already pulled in...the slight downgrade ....oh no can't back out the legs just won't do it....so have ask hubby to pull me out.LOL

Socwkbiker ... I ate alot of lean meat, fish and vegetables. I walked everyday at least 3 miles in the morning and sometimes 2 miles in the afternoon. I stayed under 1500 calories and 50 carbs per day and did alot of other cardio excersises. I was hard at first but with the help of the Good Lord I made it. The doctor told me I wouldn't live to see my Grandson graduate from elementary school if I didn't do something about my weight Scared me to do something drastic about my health condition.

<50 carbs per day? That's hard core. My stomach would think my throat had been cut!

Hey unwind,

I've been diabetic since I was 12...31 years I guess now http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif.

Insulin dependent since about 14.....I suppose I have been fortunate if you can call it that..no severe or even mildly severe low or high reactions ever. I can feel lows coming on 30 to 45 mins in advance so it has never been an issue on the bike. I do keep something high carb in the saddlebag just in case.

oh...1 vodka/tonic = about 10 units of insulin http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Hey Todd . That's great to know - the reason I'm going to try and do everything I can to keep this under control is because I love riding so much and don't want to stop for a long long long time. I've got a carb counting book now - want me to check the carb count on the vodka. http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

I found this site the other day....it's lots of IDDM/NIDDM motorcyclist =real good site.

as a supplement to your carb book, you might check out fitday.com. They have a searchable database of nutrition information for different foods; as well as allowing you to log your intake, exercise etc.

Thanks unwind,

Will check out the site..

Vodka has 0 carbs...but alcohol eventually turns to sugar .... the tonic is what gets to you though...never have been able to take the diet tonic water....

Beer on the other hand is about like drinking a soda...

My biggest weakness is and has always been bread and potatoes.......yup..pure carbs...I really need to be more closer to what Nico suggested .... veggies and protein every 3-4 hours...and leave that bread and potatoes alone as much as I can.

Wow, that's really commendable and to lose that much weight must not have been easy.

My middle son, Andrew who is 24 and healthy, is 6'2" and was pushing 3 bills a year ago. He started walking, then hiking, then running, stopped drinking and started eating right and has lost at least 100 pounds (he's not keeping track of weight). He went from a size 40 waist to a size 32, and from a 20" shirt collar to a 15-1/2". He's a lean, mean fighting machine now. It can be done.

This was on 60 minutes last night and I was astounded by the positive effects: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/17/60minutes/main4023451.shtml
It's a tough act to do as it is permanent. As someone that is about 27 stone, even at 6'5, it's too much. But as Dr. Phil would say, how is working for you?

My wife and I are both diabetic and on metformin. A very handy softback book to carry with you is "Nutrition In The Fast Lane". Franklin Publishing Inc. www.fastfoodfacts.com (http://www.fastfoodfacts.com)

The book has quite a few fast food and chain restaurants listed with their menu's broken down by many measures including calories, fat and carbs (what we pay attention to). We keep one in each car, one in the house and carry one on the bike when we ride.

Bigdave - that's great! My brother-n-law was on insulin, started riding a bicycle, rides all the time. Some days 5 miles a day. Just takes metformin now.

papat- I hear you-I'm a nurse, I see it too very sad. BTW that's an interesting
sign post showing one-way both ways ???

gghost - I'll check it out. Another good small paperback is The Calorie King' Calorie Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. See it at www.CalorieKing.com. (http://www.CalorieKing.com.) Well I guess you two can be a team - helpful and supportive of each other. Go Team!
