View Full Version : Thumb screws on bags always loose

Recently I purchased the thumb screws or knob screws that hold the bags on and the left side (as seated on the bike) keeps loosening up. I hear it rattle as I ride and I have tightened it as hard as my hand can but still vibrates loose. I could use a tool to tighten it but that kind of defeats the purpose. Should I try a lock washer or something? Odd only the one side does this? Shaft side, more vibs? ???

Try making rubber washers of gasket material or just buy a few. Place it under the knob, and things should stay snugg.

After reading your post, I went out and checked mine and they were fine. The shaft side bag did seem alittle lose, but I think it has to do with the rubber grommets the bags sit on.

Yeah....Me too...Went out and checked mine and they were fine.
I use a dry rag for grip when I tighten them....But anyway...they are still tight.

I have not had a problem with knob screws working loose....but the advise of using rubber washers makes sense.

Worth a try.

On Gadget's site, he suggests you use a little blue loctite on the left side. I did, and have had no problems with them coming loose.

Thanks, that is real interesting. If Gadget made note to do this to the left side, it has to be vibrations from the shaft.

My shaft-side is always much more loose than the other. Must be something to this -- didn't really put it together until seeing others having the same experience.

I don't see the advantage of the hand jobs, whats so hard about using a 1/4" drive rachet and 10mm socket?

I made my own quick screws, and I have the exact opposite. Mine gets so tight, I have to take a pair of channel-locks to get them to loosen. Just a 1/4 turn ,but I can't break it loose by hand. It's always the front one on the left bag, and the back one on the right????????????

I think I'd prefer the hand job over the channel locks. ;)
