View Full Version : Any Ideas On How TO Not Get Ran Over?

Today I was coming home from work. I'm in the military and wear the ABU camo uniform but wear a brightly colored vest over it while riding a Black Nomad. I also had a full length lime green vest over my rear riggs pack tour bag on the back rest. 3 different times on the way home today some dummies almost ran over me. They were on the cell phone or either just didn't care but all squeezed right in my "safe zone" in front of me cutting me off. I try to allow enough room to react but you can't hang back too far because of the idiots. I'm almost to the point of carrying a readily accesible handfull of ball bearings to bounce off their back window! Do you ever have these problems? Maybe it's just the idiots where I live. http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/> http://s2.images.proboards.com/angry.gif:(" title=">:(" border="0"/>

Yeah, you leave a safe distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you and three cars will try to pull into the gap! I swear, if it were possible to put one of those train horns on the bike one blast from that should clear out their bowels. Of course, they would probably slam on their brakes and you would rear end them! Arrrgh!

Don't feel too special. There are idiots like that all over Florida too. Most of the time they cut you off without any warning. I guess the don't want to wear out their turn signals. It seems to be getting worse every day. Too many people in cars that have no respect or consideration for others. I've thought about ball bearings, nuts and bolts, spark plug ceramic, etc. but in Jacksonville there is a minimum of at least one murder a day and lots of road rage incidents. I either back off or speed up to stay away from the traffic as much as possible and keep my cell phone in my jacket. If I get bounced off my bike I want the phone with me in case I'm still able to use it.

Cheers!

In El Paso, they have put up electronic signs on all the major highways. They have included something to the fact that bikers deserve their lane, the whole lane, etc..... Police are actually watching for cagers that are trying to squeeze the bikers, pulling them over and giving citations.

I have a bright yellow mesh jacket I wear most of the time now instead of my leather. Even though we are all trying to be more visible it seems like it is just getting worse. Today a young lady passed me in a 55 mph zone (construction) doing about 70 and either dialing or texting on her cell. Needless to say I gave her as much room as possible.

Zoom45, The horn Audio points out is the one, claimed to be the loudest horn available for bikes, 139 dB. Lots of people here have one. Search this site for "Stebel" and you should find quite a bit. Comes with and needs a rely and some additional wiring. Several of us have mounted in the same place as the stock - again, the search should turn up some pics. Happy honking.

Here's a good starting thread:

http://kawanow.proboards77.com/index.cgi?board=nomad&action=display&thread=5848

Do a search on Stebel and you will find a bunch of threads with much info on how and where to mount, wiring options, etc.

LOVE my Stebel and thinking seriously of adding another on the other side. Dual Stebels, twice as good as one!

You can buy biker whips at chilhowee leather, if anyone is interested. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I was doing 70 MPH on the freeway on my way home tonight and some idiot woman changed into my lane right in front of me. No signal, no look, no nothing. She was about 3 feet in front of me. I tried to see if she was on a cell phone, but couldn't tell.

On the back to the office from lunch, I was following a big jacked-up Super Duty. The road that leads to our parking lot ends in a cul-de-sac, at the top of the cul-de-sac is the entrance. This imbecile hits the cul-de-sac, decides the road didn't go where he thought it did and he swung a u-turn right in front of me. He got "Stebel-ized" and a 1-finger salute from me.

That's twice in one day. Idiots are everywhere.

This location will not work with the stock pipes but when I installed my Vance and Hines Baggers I installed my Stebel where the goat belly was located.

hey night rider,
did you know that the Stebel manufacturer doesn't recomend the horn mounted more than 15 degrees off center. { The air cylinder of the horn must be mounted vertically, with no more than a 15 degree variance from vertical and the air intake tube facing toward the back of the motorcycle, or it maybe routed there with a small plastic tube. }

I have a Stebel on my C50 and will be installing one on the 1600 Classic. They are louder than stock and definitely an improvement. That being said they really aren't loud enough. I would prefer something like what is used on an ocean liner, ferry boat, train, etc. but the Stebel is as loud as it is going to get for something you can put on a bike. I have had a number of occasions to use mine and maybe got the drivers attention but only 50% of the time at the most. It just doesn't penetrate rolled up windows with the stereo blasting or a person whose attention is focused on a cell phone.

The Stebel is just another tool to use but does not replace being alert and riding defensively.

I like the idea of the bikers whip and pennies/nuts and bolts/spark plug ceramic etc. but that is all after the fact and is really just a way to release anger while trying to avoid being arrested for assault. The only way to really solve the problem is to eliminate the cause/driver but the most effective way to do that is also illegal. Thus the frustration and road rage problem. So I'm back to keeping alert and keeping my distance and working on anger management.

Cheers!

It does change the tone of the exhaust note just a little bit, but it's pretty subtle. They slip right on the stockers and I used a couple of stainless steel screws to secure them.

It's not just with Bikes. I commute from Yonkers to Brooklyn via Manhattan and people are just inconsiderate.

I have often joked about this justifying "car to car missiles". Sometimes you just want to blow them away!

I don't commute on the Bike, though I wish I could. I drive a Mariner Hybrid and just take my time and do you know what?.....I get there just as quick as those A-holes who cut in and out, never mind those who are talking on the phone, texting, reading newspapers and putting on make-up!

Assume the knucklehead in the next lane is going to drift in front of you.

When you come to an intersection assume the joker is going to blow through the light or stop sign.

In local traffic assume the idiot backing out of the driveway is going to come out right in your path.

In other words, assume everyone behind the wheel is a flaming, inconsiderate idiot, and drive defensively.

Keep your head alert, on a swivel, and stay safe.

Last weekend I took a quick ride of a couple hundred miles that took me down farm roads, the interstate, highways, and so on. On the home stretch, less then twenty miles from home this SOB in a crappy teal-colored double cab early 90s model GMC starts slowly but surely pulling over into my lane.

I hit the Stebel and held it, and held it, and held it for what seemed like forever, but it didn't phase this jackass whatsoever. And he SAW me! He was looking right at me, because I was right next to the damn truck. I finally gave him the finger and jammed the gas before he completely ran me over.

Point of my post: I held that Stebel button depressed for several seconds, right next to his passenger door. I could have reached out and touched the damn truck. But it didn't phase him one bit.

I suppose I should have been scared, but I was just pissed off more than anything. I remember thinking how I wished I had something heavy to throw back at his windshield.

Come on guys, really. What would a loud horn do? Some clown cuts you off and you hit the horn. Are they going to say, "Sorry, here let me move back into the lane I came from. I didn't mean it. " No they're just going to totally ignore you like they did originally. Or you've gone and pissed some nut case off. Now you've got real troubles.
We ride motorcycles. They are inherently dangerous compared to a cars or trucks. Cars and trucks ALWAY have the right of way. Now that's a reality. When things like this happen to me, I just bite my lip, control my temper and let it go.

I've had people start to turn on me when I hit the Stebel and they abruptly pull back into their lane. Last guy I did it too then pulled up behind me and laid on his horn. Had to laugh, must have really riled him. Another time the jerk wips back in and a gal in a car on the other side of me screamed, her window was down. Luv that Stebel, it does work at times.

Yesterday I was nearly rear ended making a right turn. Long before the turn I set my sigs on and hit it twice. I also made a hand signal, and on a country back road the cager behind me locked his brakes up ...

It appears no one drive anymore.. Since I was in the lead and slowing for a turn well 'IDed', I have no idea what the cager was doing..

As to throwing things... it won't work, and you better not do it.

Long ago in my teens I rode with a 3 foot long snap on 3/8"drive extention, and used it once.

I was on old Rt 1 north of Boston heading south in the passing lane. A driver bumped the bars on my 650 Bonnie from the driving lane and when I looked at him he was grinning..

I moved over some, but was caught in traffic at 55+, and guy did it again. Probably it was over long hair, as in those days anyone with long hair could take a real beating.

Well he wasn't going to get a 3rd chance, and a whipped his windshield and broke it to diamonds.

These days that might get you shot.. Now if you carry, like me maybe that isn't a bad option, but I just don't think it is..

And last I don't just carry on a bike. I carry 24/7 , and I mean it. I don't go to bed, take a shower, or anything with out one defence weapon at home and, I don't leave home with out 2.

All state laws be damned.... NH motto is Live Free or Die, and so I carry anywhere, that counts the post office, schools, stores, Mass NY, just all the time... So it is no biker thing to me.. I have much deeper reasons.

If you don't know me you will never know..

I sort of suffered something like that last summer... I have no idea what it was, other than it was the loudest thing I have ever heard in my life. I have no explaination. I was riding my Nomad on a local road and the bang seemed to come from another vehical going the other way.

It was so loud it hurt, and I am accustomed to some very big calibur guns a man can hold, and a few more to big for a man to hold. What ever this was topped all of them.

I really have no idea what made the sound and couldn't see any cause...

Yeah, and what about the M88 (for those who don't know, it's a tow truck for tanks...one was used at the Branch Davidian Complex in Waco.)? Doesn't it get something like 4 GALLONS to the Mile?!?

If I remember right, the Abrahms carries a total of like 500 gallons of Diesel in it's three gas tanks!
