If you had to do it all over again...what mods would you not have bought?...and what would you or did you replace them with? Might save us all some$$$ + time.

Here is an example.

I bought a pair of the round cheap ($35) highway pegs with O rings to grip your boot. I don't like the round shape as my boots want to slip down with nothing to catch them. I think I would buy the more expensive ones that have a heel rest.

You know, I have said it more than once about all the mod's I have done to my Nomad, that I wouldn't do over if I was to buy a new one!
Just leave it alone and ride it.
But the more I think about it I don't regret any of the things I have done to the bike, and wouldn't think twice of starting another project again someday. There are some things I have ask myself why?? But that is the learning curve I guess and I just keep going.
I beleive that is the fun of having a scooter http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

1 item I like but wont do again is the rear saddlebag crash guard bra/bib...to protect the bags..I my ride to Va. from Maine Dirt got behind them and scratched the clear coat.... :'( NOT cool ..
As for your future peg purchase,, I assume you are talking about the Kuryakyn Switch Blades,, Nice till you use the heal rest,,then the R slide slips down no matter how tight you make it.mine had a smooth mounting surface,, I think you can now get a serrated version.THAT is the way to go.....JUST my 2 cents,,,Rich

Got the Electrical Connection turn signal conversion kit but never installed it after seeing it, just didn't look like it would amount to much and after a couple people here pointed out that you can't really see the running lights in the day time, perhaps the brake lights would show. Did the SignalMinder plug-n-play similar conversion to another bike and am real happy with that but costs twice as much and there is no unit for the 1600 Nomad.

I like all my mods. I take a while to research them and think through instead of impulse buying. the only thing I wouldnt buy again is the windshield bag. Its nice but too small to hold much but couple pr's glasses. I have the longhorn dually hi-way pegs and since they are so adjustable, your feet dont slip off and they hold up well.

Things I've done to previous Nomads, that I didn't do to this one.

Air kit, Vance & Hines pipes, grips, heat tape type grip heaters (not enough heat).

Got a drivers backrest back in 99, and have had one ever since. I also like having a Windshield.

+1 on the saddle bag chaps damaging the finish.

+1 with the drivers backrest being one of the best mods along with handlebar risers & hiway pegs....-Rich

I wouldn't buy the led lights I have on my bags. They do not show up as they are tilted upward to conform with the bag shape. You can see what I mean in my sig pic. Led's are directional and need to be more vertical to be seen from behind.
They are coming off and more vertical led's will go on soon.
Other than that all the mods I have made I would make again.

I agree. I think after my St Jude ride next week, I will have to remove them and maybe only use them for that ride. Seems to be little lines forming. :'( but I do like the way they look.

Why haven't you put the Air kit, Vance & Hines pipes back (not worth the mula? no time, no interest?)?

Fortunately, I haven't really bought too much that I don't like. Great highway pegs, backrest.

If I had to do all over again and I think I might, I would remove all the resistors I've added (all in the name to save money!) to fool the ECM and just put in a Cobra or TFI and be done with it!

I did it on my 99 back when it was new just to get more power. It just didn't seem worth the expense for what you get.

I had a neighbor with the same 99 that was bone stock. On roll ons I would slightly pull forward, but on a scale from 1-10 it was like going from a 4.2 to a 4.8, just not worth it to me.

When I got my second 99 after putting 63,000 miles on the first, I was surprised to find that I liked the stock exhaust quiet of the second bike. I've kept the stock exhaust on my last 3 Nomads.

So far I would add everything again except maybe the lower bag rails. They are advertised to save your bags from shopping carts, but I really don't think they protect the bags from much. Lots of money for very little protection. Favorite--Grasshopper backrest, MCE highway pegs, Stebel Horn, top bag rails, and of course the most expensive option----the baffelectomy.

I removed my Progressive air fork balancing kit.
It leaked between the adapter's valve stem and the aluminum billet. After fixing that it still had a slow leak that I could not find.

I think I'll try the valve stem extensions next.

My Chatterbox works but I would not buy one again. Have never talked to another MC on the chatterbox. I'm going to remove it and all of the accessories and sell it and buy a CB radio.

My 2001 Nomad 1500FI came with a hypercharger- I would never buy one if I get a different Nad. Looks nice, but is a pain in the "*ss" - (oh no, I mean right knee) LOL :)

Hi, I made larger lowers but for me they were not worth the effort and they were uuuuuugly. I can live with the stock ones.

I have only done mods in the name of safety or comfort. Risers, backrest, spotlights, and refectors on the bags. The exhaust, intake, and computer are all stock. If I want to go fast I borrow my sons sportbike.

Schoeney, I'm glad you started this thread...there are some great ideas here both of what to do, and what not to do. It is great to hear from so many about what they do like about their bikes and what they wish they would have left alone.
Rich
P.S. Did you get those O-ring highway pegs at Pro-Caliber? I bought a set for my '01 Shadow and hated them. I'll definitely save up for the longhorn dullies!

I bought a pair for about the same price from JC W and they work great. Instead for o-ring like pads they are contoured and have a flat spot that does just fine. Adjustable and very tight fitting too, can't imagine needing more, but have never tried the others.

Rksaw..No, I got them at the Kawasaki dealer is Salem....can't remember the name but the one on the East side of i-5 (not the Honda Dealer).

I also agree that hearing everyone elses reflections on their mods is helping me decide what to do or at least change the pecking order of my wish my list. I was on the fence on some ,now I won't bother on a couple of them and feel better about ones I was leaning towards...please keep your thoughts on these mods coming guys + gals as it helping the rest of us!

Ells..I will take a look at the JCW site. Thanks for the tip!

I bought all clear lenses and then saw there were so-called clear bulbs that glow red. The bulbs look chrome and are not bright at all, they came out the same day.

I bought the front fender rail, but didn't install it. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't like the way it looked.

I have bought several bikes and modded each one with tons of stuff. When I bought my Nomad I decided that I am not adding mods to it unless it serves a function.

I did this for 2 reasons 1) I spend way too much money on mods. 2) The nomad has so many things already that come standard on it and they look so nice just the way they are, I didn't have the heart to mess with it.

The only thing I've bought for the bike is a set of driving lights. Everything else I made. I have no regrets with the installs and everything works very well. My total investment in add ons has reached a staggering 155 bucks so far. :) :) :) Bdog
