Came across this on the rider magazine site and found it pretty funny.

To Wave or Not to Wave

By Shalom Auslander

I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you, what first drew me to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but the feeling that I'd become part of a special community—a brotherhood, really. Nothing calms me more than a long ride down the interstate, waving to the members of my beloved clan. Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate, hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know what I do? I don't wave. With their little tassle handlebars and the studded luggage and the half-helmets—. God, they drive me crazy.

You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, I do hate those guys. I don't wave at them, either. They think they're so great, sitting all upright, with their 180-degree German engines. God, I hate them. They're almost as bad as those old bastards on their touring motorcycles. You know what I call those bikes? "T wo-wheeled couches!" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive around like they've got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere else, Grampa, and while you're at it, I'm not waving to you.

Ducati guys—? I don't wave at them either. Why don't they spend a little more money on their bikes? "You can have it in any color you want, as long as it's red." Aren't you cool! Like they even know what a desmo-whatever engine is, anyway. Try finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I never, ever wave at those guys.

Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at them, either. They always have those stupid helmets sitting on top of their stupid heads, and God forbid they should wear any safety gear. They make me so mad. Sometimes they'll speed by and look over at me and you know what I do? I don't wave. I just keep on going. Please, don't get me started on Kawasaki guys. Ninjas? What are you, twelve years old? Team Green my ass. I never wave at Kawasaki guys.

I ride a Honda, and I'll only wave at Honda guys, but even then, I'll never wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah, like you're going to get your knee down on the New York Thruway. Nice crotch, by the way. Guys in full leathers will never get a wave from me, and by the way, neither will the guys in two-piece leathers. And I'll tell you who else I'm not waving at.......—those guys with the helmets with the loud paint jobs. Four pounds of paint on a two pound helmet–like I'm going to wave back to that! I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor. Or helmet stickers. Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.

To me, motorcycling is a like a family, a close-knit brotherhood of people who ride Hondas, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not Vanson) with regular gloves and a solid-color helmet with a clear visor, no stickers, no racing gloves and regular boots (not Timberlands). And isn't that what really makes riding so special?

There is a great deal of truth hiding in that piece. Hell I wave at everybody if I feel comfortable and safe. Sometimes I feel like a queen on parade lol

That was good!! I can't tell what type I am waving to half the time, although in my area, it's going to be 95 percent HD.

Now that thar is funny! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Only problem is a whole lot of people are like that! :( Course, that don't bother me a whole lot, the world is always going to have it's share of dumbasses. ::)

As far as waving, I can't recognize 99% of the bikes I see anyway so I just wave at everybody. If'n they don't wanna wave back, that's OK. No skin off my hide. ;)

LOL.. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif ... that's funny.. and some truth with the fast moving 'zukis and BMWs I reckon.

I wave at everyone.. and toot my horn AND wave at good looking chicks (whether they are walking, riding or driving) ;)

I find that half of the HD guys wave back... probably mistaking my bike for a harley and by the time they worked it out it was too late.

I rode past a group of about 10 HD custom bikes last week.. monkey bars and bright colored choppers.. they ALL waved !

Sometimes you just never know...

Well, I had the same problem with the Harley riders, until I got a Quadzilla Fairing. Now as we get close to one other, I'm waving like a mad man, and they are waving like a mad man (or woman), then as we get real close, bike to bike, the wave changes into a one finger wave... I bet that's a special code that all real motor cycle riders use, don't ya think? Feels good to be in the club!

lol....that's too funny!!

I wave at all motorcycles and anyone else that waves.

Now I don't do the embarrassing, frantic, I desperately need your wave back kind of wave. I choose to do the I am so super cool arm straight out, low arm pass kind of wave. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Only problem is, its hard to look cool when your old, fat, bald, with wife and dog on the back. ;)

Passing at speed with your leather, helmet and glasses/goggles on, it's hard to tell you are old, bald and fat....so be as young, handsome and super cool as you feel. No one will know the difference except maybe the old lady....and she loves you no matter what....!!

I wave to everyone...motorcycles, scooters, bikes, tricycles, cars, trucks, SUVs, semis, gopher turtles. I'm just happy to be riding. Of course, my left arm gets a little tired.

I wave at every biker. And 99% of the time, they wave back. The only time I don't wave is when I'm in the middle of something, coming to a stop, turning a corner, etc.

It's like we are the only ones in on the secret. The secret of how much fun is to ride! http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Hell, I think that makes you look even cooler.

If your ridding 2-up it seems like the other 2-up riders will wave back sooner

Every night on my way home in about the same place on I-57 I exchange waves with a dude on a HD that looks like by brothers last ride. Prolly never find out if it is. But you know on the days I don't meet the guy I wonder if he's OK. Then I see him the next day and think well we both made it through work to ride home another day. Don't care what you ride or drive, it's just like when I'm drivin' a big truck, we all wave at each other because we have something in common. MAN & MACHINE! Okay, sorry ladies......Person & Machine.

As a school bus driver about 95% wave to one another, most likely thinking your crazy too.
The 5% that don't wave must think they are driving a Harley http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Wheelie, that barn looks like my house feels. (sigh) A carpenters house is the last one to get worked on.

I'd rather ride than work for free.

The barn was built by my great grand father. It's about a hundred years old. I used to milk cows every morning & evening just in side that walk in door on the right. My mom still lives in the old house sleeps in the same room she was born in and my father died in. It all sets at the end of a winding road that at one time was part of a stage coach route. It was a great place to grow up.......even though according to Mom, I never did grow up.

That is very cool Wheelie! Welcome on board btw, if I haven't done so yet!!

I wave at everyone on two wheels, sometimes even three. I was going through dallas on a busy interstate and found a place to pull over and check my bag. About that time a brand new HD pulled in behind me. He started to ask if everything was ok, but instead stated, WOW thats a nice bike, thought you might need help but your on a Kawi, they dont break down every twenty miles. We exchanged numbers and ride together often. I always pull over and check on downed vehicles, sometimes it is dangerous, but sometimes you can realy help somone.
