View Full Version : September Vacation

One of the reasons I wanted the Nomad was to travel around and relax. I have been planning a fall vacation trip since December. About the only place I am actually going is Rapid City, SD for a few days to see my folks, family, and a few friends. My folks are in their 90s. Everything else in between is a direction rather than a destination. I do not have to be anywhere specific at any given time, so no pressure to meet a deadline. The vacation loop will be modified on a whim, so it may or may not be my actual route. My wife and son are staying home. They have been all over the US for most of the summer. Neither one has any desire to ride, so I get to go solo and do whatever.

My major problem is how to get there. Laugh if you want, I could drive the four lane in my sleep. I want scenery, away from rush hour traffic, and it will probably take me forever to get between stops. (Sorry Dan, I would drive you totally nuts with how slow I am going to ride.) I'll probably stop every time there is another pullout. Take plenty of pictures, etc.

The Breckenridge thread caught my attention. I haven't been to a couple of those areas, so it would be different. There were several other areas mentioned throughout the forum, too. I have looked at several dozen different ways to go up and back.

Presently it looks like the first three weeks of September and a little over 3,300 miles for a nice loop. After a PM to some of the guys, their suggestion was to do Colorado first rather than take the chance of an early snow storm. Yes, I know it is likely to be a bit chilly in a few areas. After an entire summer of 110 degrees, I'll dress for the cooler temperatures.

Dan suggested doing a google map and posting the link so others could chime in what I might want to explore. The checkpoints are for reference only to make the map fairly simple. Other than the first day to get out of Arizona, I probably will only do a couple of hundred miles at a time.

Probably make it as far as Shiprock, NM the first day. Payson, Holbrook, Gallup, and Shiprock are all 90 mile segments. I haven't been to Mesa Verde National Park in years, figured it might be nice to wander through it on my way to Silverton, CO the next day.

I'll stay in the Silverton area for a couple of days, always have liked that area. Might rent a jeep and do the Alpine Loop for the heck of it.

Go from Silverton toward Breckenridge. Don't know how much time I might spend there. Assuming the weather cooperates, go up Mt. Evans. Then take 40 up to Rocky Mountain National Park. After that go on toward Rapid City.

Since I grew up in the Black Hills, I'll take the opportunity to ride around the hills area a bit. Found out that my brother-in-law, nephew and his girlfriend all have rides. Guess that has been a closely guarded secret from my folks. Looks like I will be the lightning rod and if I survive, then the rest of the family might admit that they ride, too.

After a few days with the family, I'll head toward Yellowstone. Beartooth Pass sounds interesting, I've never been over it. Probably take a couple days to get to Yellowstone, and spend another couple of days in the park.

South out of Yellowstone toward Bryce Canyon National Park, UT. Tetons and a bunch of other stuff in between. That segment is listed as a little over 600 miles. It will take a couple days to get there, no hurry. Dan and several others have mentioned highway 12, seems like a good time to check it out.

Then finally it will be time to bite the bullet and head back home. I'll take my time getting to Flagstaff. From there home is where I will have to pay close attention. Traffic will continue to get heavier, especially from Payson the rest of the way into Chandler.

Suggestions are welcome. If there is something near my proposed route, I might take the time to go look. Then again, I might change my whole route because the suggestion sounds interesting, who knows. My whole purpose is to de-stress. I'm hoping the weather cooperates of course. Any input will be appreciated, thanks.

Mark,

If it was me, I'd go out US 60 through Globe to Show Low, then up 60 through Springerville and into New Mexico, then stay on 60 E and go through Pie Town and Datil to Socorro, then catch I-25 to ABQ. I'd avoid I-40 through Gallup if possible.

But if you want to go up through Shiprock, this would be out of your way. Just my 2 cents worth.

Mark, I dragged your Utah section around a bit. If you have the time, the Alpine loop from Provo Canyon over to American Fork is one of the best.

The Nebo Loop, from Payson just east of Nephi is another super road.

Then Fairview Canyon is next, another good one, then it's down to HWY 12 as you had planned and to Bryce.

I'd also change your route from Evanston Wy to Near Park city, Ut from going down I-80, and switch it to the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway.

The Mirror Lake Scenic Byway is a nice ride. I've never done it on a bike, but it's great in a car. Mirror Lake is up at 10,200 feet. We used to camp up there. That's truly God's Country.

When You get further north you could go up logan canyon to bear lake, ride north into idaho and head east into Teton village. I forget the name of the pass but its supposed to be really nice.

Targhee Pass I think? That is nice up there.

Correction: Targhee Pass is along the Continental Divide between Idaho and Montana outside of West Yellowstone, MT. Teton Pass is also along the Divide, but is between Victor, ID and Jackson Hole, WY.
I think that's what you're thinking of, WM.

Markg:

Seems like you are getting quite a few good ideas -- I am sure a few more will follow -- so I won't add any.

However; all I'll suggest is that you take your time; watch your speed; and stop for rest when you are the least bit tired.

We would like to hear all about it and see pics when you are done.

Back to the mapping programs again. Thanks for the suggestions, Dan. I forgot to zoom in a few levels and the smaller roads did not show up. Missed the one south of Evanston. The others look good, too. Haven't been through Utah as often as I have Colorado. Wolfman and CJ also had some nice ideas that I'll have to examine.

glwilson, no concerns about taking my time. This trip is for relaxing, not having to get anywhere by any specific time. Once I get into the scenic areas, I will slow down quite a bit. There should be a lot of picture opportunities. If I start getting tired, I plan on stopping not pushing it. I'll take a cutout to something easier, if needed. I can always go back and see the sections I might miss some other time.

I'll have to watch for the exact opposite of the extreme heat of Mesquite. This time I will be starting out in hot temperatures and fully expect it to be considerably colder in some sections. I won't push the elements.

I may actually decide what route I am taking before I leave. Then again, I always seem to have more fun when I wing it. We'll see how well I do getting to South Dakota verses the amount of time I will have to get back. So far the suggestions are marvelous. Thanks guys. :)

Mark,

Your map brings you to near my backdoor, at least to a stretch I like ride often called the Peak-to-Peak highway up from the south from I-70 to Estes Park. Let me know when the time get closer what your schedule will be and maybe could meet up and ride with you for a ways.

Looks like a great trip. You may already know this; but at Silverthorne CO; you can take a road through Dillon up to Breckenridge rather than backtracking as your map shows. It is not that far to go -- so you could actually go back to Silverthorne and then continue on to Leadville. Have done that route via car many times before.

MarkG

Obviously the link glitched, (so much for edit, copy, paste) there is no loop back in the Breckenridge area. It should have been through Breckenridge on to Mt. Evans (only that is beginning to sound a little iffy depending on the weather.) Then on through Estes Park up to SD. No wonder things looked a little odd.

Met Mark in Nederland and rode to Estes with several photo stops. He seems to be having a great time on his trip. Was good to meet and get a chance to get to know him. He pulled in to our meeting point within 10 seconds of when he said he would although my clock was more accurate than his. We ran the Peak-to-Peak pretty much at the posted speeds with Mark in the lead until we pull into Estes. Had fine but a little windy weather. The cooler moist weather we have been having here on the plains had not pushed far into the mts so has been good for him, although they are getting some frost.

While waiting for Mark in Nederland, I was early, another Nomad pulled in with a friend on a Yamaha from Evergreen, CO. Turned out to be a guy who register here as mtn1600 last Feb and who has never posted but says he checks in once in a while. He didn't know about Markg's arrival and left with his bud before Mark showed. Sent him a PM, he's made number of mods/adds to his '06/Black.

Okay everybody, I just had the nicest vacation ride. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif My original miles estimate was off by about a 1,000 miles. Just a hair over 4,100 miles for my three week vacation. I walked in the door about 10 minutes ago.

Ells, I had a great ride. Thanks for joining me through the peak to peak leg.

Give me a chance to get things squared away and I'll post all the details for the inquiring minds. My average mileage was around 42 - 43 mpg.

Only have about a 1,000 pictures or so to go through. I'll post a few.

Been out of touch for three weeks so there will be a bit of a catch up. The Nomad ran perfectly the entire trip. It turned heads and generated questions and comments just about everywhere I went.

I had an absolute ball. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif http://s2.images.proboards.com/cool.gif

I'm working on it. http://s2.images.proboards.com/cheesy.gif The main computer hard drive is dying. http://s2.images.proboards.com/tongue.gif I had to save the data files to keep the wife happy. :'( I'll get to the details and some pictures as soon as I can. ;)

The very quick stats. Everybody seemed to like the Nomad regardless of what they were riding. I averaged 40 to 45 mpg and kept my speed around 65 (70 indicated to allow for speedo error) or less most of the time. After all, I was in no hurry and had no real schedule to keep. 4,146 miles later I am none the worse for wear and the Nomad is running great. I have over 9,000 miles on the Bridgestones and the mechanics tell me I can wait a few more weeks before they get down to the wear bars to replace them.

Arizona, Four Corners, Colorado (Mesa Verde National Park, Silverton, Peak to Peak with Ells), South Dakota (Rapid City, Black Hills, Wall Drug), Wyoming (Yellowstone National Park, Tetons), Utah (Nebo Loop, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park), back into Arizona.

Special thanks goes to Lonnie for an excellent backrest, Dlarue for the front highway bar covers. These two items made my ride so much more comfortable. Ells, of course, for riding along with me for a while and pointing out the interesting landmarks along the Peak to Peak run. The Kawasaki mechanics for making sure the Nomad was just perfect before I left on vacation.

I will try really hard the next couple of days to come up with a narrative and some pictures. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
