What's the deal, with the double windshield on the nomad.... mine is 2 years old now, and starting to get dirty enough betwene the two, that I'm thinking about pulling it apart to clean. Just looking, it dosn't look like it serves any purpose, and could be done away with... But, I'm sure its there for a reason.... What Is It.... thanks ronnie

Well if your main shield is on the lowest setting, the lower is essentially useless. What it's for is when you raise your main you will still have a good fit on the lower end to keep all the air from rushing in underneath.
I would advise being careful when you take it off. Do not allow the two peices to slide or contact one another because there will be a lot of fine grit in there to make some good scratches if you're not careful.

This is the very reason why I removed mine.

I keep my windshield on the lowest setting...Which puts the top of the windshield at about nose level.
I have no plans to ever need to raise it....So I;m thinking about removing the lower piece.

Just remember if you remove the lower piece you need to put spacers in there.
I painted the back of my stock shield black where the lower piece is. then put it back together. This keeps people from seeing all the stuff that gets between them.
I have a ClearView shield now so no double piece. i painted the lower part black anyway 'cause I like the look.

I just took mine apart last Sunday and decided to not put the bottom shield back. I've had NO issue or noticed any difference, but TC is correct...make sure you put the spacers and rubber back as it was to make sure all fits tight. ALSO....MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TRACK OF THE SCREW/BOLT LOCATIONS WHEN YOU TAKE THEM APART. They're not all the same size. I found that out a long time ago when I first put on my windshield bag!! What a PITA!!! LOL!

Yeah Matt, talk about a PITA. My ClearView windshild instructions say you can leave the protective film on it and mount it on your bike to test ride. If you like it, take it back apart and remove the film , then put it on a second time. If you don't like it, send it back for refund.
Well I took my stock shield apart and started to put on the new one with the film still on.
What the hell, you need three hands and both feet. decided to take film off so I only had to do it one time.
It was worth it hough. That shield cut down on buffeting alot.

Get you a 2 inch taller and wider tinted from Rifle. It's one piece and I couldn't be happier with mine. Just the right height to block off everything and still looks great!!

Don't know much about the rifle but my ClearView is one and a half inches taller and two inches wider. Works very well :)

I also removed mine and have the main shield set in the lowest position. I think I just used a couple of regular old lock washers I had laying around for spacers.

TC did you spring for the vent???

Top Cat

No Doc, just got grey tint and 1 1/2" higher and 2" wider.
I didn't think the vent would be anything I needed.

TC...being wider, does it help deflect the wind around your hands... Just thinking about winter time.

Top Cat

Yeah Matt, it does deflect it a little more. It is only 1" on each side so not a whole lot more deflection. I used to get hit on the fingers by bugs and bees once or twice on each ride. Now I have only been hit once in the 500 or so miles I put on since the change.

Rich, I'm 5' 11" and the 1 1/2" sitting on the headlight comes up about to the bridge of my nose. I used to be 6" tall, I don't know what happened ???
What setting do you have the stock shield at Rich? Also where does it come on your face at that setting?

Too much riding (he said sarcasticly)...even though you have a backrest, you might still slouch a little...the grasshopper backrest is first on my Christmas list--I'm starting to drop hints early this year--to work on my posture!

I'd like to see pics of the painted lower piece if possible. Nico was the first Nomad windshield I saw painted.

Rich, I don't think the 4" taller would be to tall if , as you say , you are looking way over the stock one at it's highest setting.
The ClearView comes with a protective plastic on both sides. They let you install it and ride with it as long as you don't remove the protective plastic. then if you don't like it you can return it for a refund. So you could try it for free. Great deal I think. I didn't do that as it is a pain in the ass changing the hardware once , let alone twice ;) If you get someone to help you it would be much easier.
Scion0, I will post a pic of the old shield painted and the new shield painted this afternoon on this thread.
rksaw , if it is because of too much riding then I will be only 4' tall by the Finger Lakes tour next year. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Here's the pics of the old shield and the new shield as requested.
You paint the back of the shield. If you do this to either shield be careful putting it back together so as to not to scratch the paint. Don't slide it, put it in place and then place everything else on and bolt it together.

I pulled mine off a while ago, you need to be onto where things go and make sure you separate the 2 pieces quickly and without rubbing together. Depending on how the dealer did them up there could be some cracking around the holes. Also I found a fair bit of rust under the chrome so spent some time cleaning and polishing. It was well worth it. I'm 6'3 so have mine all the way up and the bottom shield down as far as it will go without rubbing on the HL.

Rich, it's not a real lot of recurve but I think it helps push the air up over you a bit. I was a little worried about it not looking good but it looks kind of unique on the Nomad. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif
I'm glad I got the recurve.
