I bought a leather helmet that doesn't have any kind of vents which means that it now smells like my old high school football practice uniform and helmet. You know, the uniform that gets washed once a season whether it needs it or not?
So what can I use to get that nasty sweat smell out of my lid? http://s2.images.proboards.com/shocked.gif

Have you tried Frebreeze. That stuff seems to work well on smellls.

I have used febreeze or however you spell it on a helmet liner before. I'd give that a try first.

smells are usually caused by bacteria farting, fornicating and dying. I've had success with a regular spray of an anti bacterial such as Dettol, water it down a bit, give the lining a spray and leave overnight. Usual warning - test on a small area first etc etc. Works real well on boot linings too!

A leather helmet? You mean like they used to wear back in the 20's and 30's ??? You bought this to wear on your motorcycle rides ??? Hey, just wondering :)
I agree with the anti-bacterial spray such as lysol or other variant, followed by insertion of a fabric softener dryer sheet. You can place it in the lid before putting it on your head. Your do-rag will keep the fabric softener stuff off your scalp.
If you would rather not wear the dryer sheet, you can disinfect it and after it dries place the dryer sheet against the liner and then put it in a plastic bag for a day or two.

LMAO!!! Not that kind of leather. The DOT kind with leather on the outside. Unfortunately the mfg decided that vents weren't necessary.
Thanks for all the input. I'll get some febreeze and that Dettol stuff.

Spray it with Lysol to kill bacteria then stuff a couple of Odor Eaters into the helmet. They have activated charcoal and should suck up odor.

Also wear a Do-rag on your head with the helmet. Let it absorb the sweat and odor. Another member here does that and claims that it works. You can have a clean one every day if you want.

A very experienced car and rv salesman said he could get the odor out by using coffee packets to absorb the smell. I told a friend recently, and he threw a coffee pack into each room of a old, cigarette smoked up, dirty mobile home. My friend said advised that trick really does work and was glad to learn about it.
Socwkbiker you might throw your helmet and coffee packet into a tied up walmart sack to see what happens. I'm serious, you know I wouldn't lie to you. http://s2.images.proboards.com/grin.gif

Or, you could just let the bacteria fart on your head as someone stated. Might actually feel good on long rides, sort of a head massage from the bacteria butt.

Put it in a zip lock bag and then put it in the freezer for 2 weeks.

I looked at them there leather helmets. I thought they were purty, even tried one on. Then, I said, damn, there's no vents here in this bad boy, and it's black and covered with leather. Shooooo-weeeee, I wasn't about to do that. Now, you done gone and made me feel real good about that decision. ;)
smells are usually caused by bacteria farting, fornicating and dying....
They're so damn small, how can you tell if they're actually still fornicating?
I mean, you probably wouldn't want to put the helmet on until they're all done, right?
They make those leather helmets in XXXXL?

Sure do. Have to have enough room to hold this big brain. So I guess you buy XS?
Thanks for the visual of bacteria farting on my head. That's not one I will soon forget. I saw that bell sells a similar helmet that has vents. I may look into that one someday.

Jeff,
Just take a big dump in it and let it sit for a few days. After that it shouldn't have that old sweat sock smell. Anything else I can do to help, please let me know.

There is a product called Sandalife. I got it for my leather sandals. Bought at TradHome shoes in the mall here. Works great. Designed specifically for the purpose of stinky leather. Saddle soap works good too but leaves a bit of a smell itself. But to me that is what leather should smell like.

Jeff... you just have to know it was hard for me to not jump on the band wagon and rag on ya!!! Anyway... try Lexoil... or Murphy's Saddle Soap. It's a leather cleaner that will help get some of the smell out and condition the leather at the same time. I'm still trying to figure out why in the hell somebody in HOT ASS TEXAS would want a black leather helmet?!?!?!? Somebody also mentioned a dorag....that will help also.... and of course putting a fabric softener sheet inside the lining will help too.
Of course...all of these suggestions are a waste of time... your sweaty melon is just going to stink it up again!!!! LOL!!
I'd definately prefer saddle soap to the smell of fornicating bacteria.

I got a leather covered helmet also. Fabreeze works pretty good.
I plan to start wearing a durag under it though, that would probably be cooler as well.

It's my horny helmet that has that lovely aroma. BTW, without going out and buying anything, I tried the dryer sheet method and will admit it smelled a lot better! I still plan on buying some of the products suggested so I can keep it smelling fresh.
"Fresh" might be a bit much to hope for, from what I'm hearing. Keeping the flies offa it might be a more reasonable goal. ;)
I say first spray with Febreeze....then set it down and first set the coffee inside...then the dryer sheet....THEN while wearing the doo-rag....carefully place the helmet on your head...please have some one take a pic of you taking it all off....might be a good pic!! Fresh coffee at least...depending on how much your head sweats in the heat!!
